How deep are the book shelves?

12 years ago
I am having a built in made right now and the contractor thought that he would make the shelves on either side 8" and the ones over the TV 9". The base unit is 18" on the sides and 20 " in the center. I do not have the fireplace, so my TV will be mounted on the wall over the base cabinet which is standard height. I am not sure they are deep enough. That is why I am asking.
