Proper lighting can make any kitchen look better and you certainly have some opportunities here. The central fluorescent is a sure way to flatten out a kitchen. You need recessed adjustable lights over the focal points to create sharper shadows that will give the room depth. The backsplash looks like Crema Marfil which looks fine if it's lit with undercabinet lighting but very boring without.
The empty area above the wall cabinets makes the room look like a suit whose sleeves are too short. I'd like to see a bigger crown molding and maybe a wide piece of artwork above.
In general I'd say you need some texture and contrast but black appliances may be too much for the cabinets and countertops. I've had some spectacular results from painting refrigerators and dishwashers. An electrostatic paint job can be done right in the kitchen with very little overspray. You can also choose any color you want. Metallic colors go very well with the warm tones in wood. I could easily see a champagne metallic doing wonders for this space.
Painting cabinets is another story. I think warming up the walls with a warmer color would be a better way to go and with the money you save you could get some nice granite countertops and an undermount sink.
