I'd love room arrangement ideas

Have you tried pulling the sofa closer to the fireplace, so that the traffic happens behind it?

Yes...that's where it is currently...

I just can't figure out the space...with only one "real" wall, I'm having trouble with TV placement and corners for sitting...do I add more chairs? Another sofa? A sectional? What about oak fireplace and trim? Paint it??? Also high ceilings...how do I decorate it?

HERE Design seems to have it covered. My two cents - get a larger coffee table and a more substantial mantel. Also loose the valances and get drapes! Hang them ceiling height and let them fall all the way to the floor. Use a very simple design - don't bring in any more colors than you are already using. Choose colors in the brick, the chair and the blinds (it looks like the blinds are green on my ipad). You have a very nice room to work with. :)

I would paint the mantel and wood around the fireplace. Either a dark color picked up from the fireplace itself or if you want to keep the wood, I would have it stained a much darker tone.

Thanks for all the suggestions...we moved the furniture around last night...making it cozier and bringing things closer together...TV is moved to opposite wall...now in search of new drapes, sofa table and bigger coffee table...I also have been REALLY thinking about the mantel...a change for sure...we have "outdated" oak trim throughout entire house...trying to decide what to do...

Paint all the trim white. Use larger objects in a balanced arrangement on the mantel. Replace valances with floor to ceiling drapes. I used brown because it was what I had on hand, but I'd probably look for something with a bit more color and pattern if I had more time. This is a start, anyway.

Overall, I think I would want the space to be visually simpler, rather than outlining and separating every item on the wall. So, I might paint the oak base and window trim generally to match whatever color the wall was. I also think it might be better to use a darker color that was more in the range of values of the fireplace surround, in order to minimize the contrast (again, in the interest of simplifying.) Maybe try it on the fireplace wall and the tall wall adjacent to its right as well. I like the floor to ceiling drapes, and I would try to do them and the blinds in that same color, maybe a shade darker - which probably means that you would have to start with them. Alternatively, you could leave the drapes out and just hang the blinds from the ceiling. I would consider leaving just the shelf of the mantel in its current finish, or maybe a darker stain that was related to the surrounding paint color. So, minimizing everythign except for the two things you might want to see: the fireplace with mantel and whatever is on it, and the view out the windows, if any?
