How much space between island and counter?

I have a 12' x 23' kitchen. The countertop is three feet wide, leaving thirty inches of working space between island and counter.

Should I lessen the depth of the south cabinets to 1 foot - this would increase the working space to 36 inches.

Would it be better to extend the island west and create a dining table, or better to create a banquet in that bottom left corner?

scho31--I don't know where your house is located, but under any circumstances, having a minimum of 36" between the edges of the counters is what I would recommend--you'll need more if you have a refrig. opposite a counter. Having an eating bar and trying to use stools without a minimum of 42" btw. counters is not practical, IMHO. Without a full understanding of your plan and orienation, and whether or not you are open to possible reconfiguring of your sliding door size and location, your kitchen is likely limited to working within the existing space. Given the thickness of the walls as shown, I am wondering if yours is a condo? Obviously that would limit what can be done with respect to adjusting windows. More info would be helpful. TY. At least 36 inches of clearance to walk by and work.
