How do I light my two-story formal living room??

Our foyer and formal living are two story, and while we have a standard (and UGLY) chandelier in the foyer as you enter through the front door, the formal living just to the left as you enter has no lights. This is not a problem during the day as the room has lots of natural light, but at night, even with a table lamp and floor lamp on in the formal and the chandelier in the foyer on, the upper half of the room is too dark. My first thought is recessed lighting on a dimmer, but I'm not sure. I think a larger foyer chandelier would help some,(because that ugly thing we have now has GOT to go) but it won't do enough. The attached photos are the view standing in the foyer looking into the formal, and then standing back in the formal looking towards the foyer. Any advice? Thanks in advance!

I lightened up the photos a bit since the shadows were making it hard to see much detail. These should be better.

Agree with Darzy. A room that size could handle a large showpiece that can also be seen through the beautiful window. What style do you prefer? Color? Beautiful house BTW

Thank you both for your comments - great idea. It brings up another question - the formal looks directly into my dining room, where I have a crystal chandelier that is seen from the formal. I've attached a photo of that view and a closeup of the chandelier. Would a huge chandelier in the formal fight with the one in the dining?

Okay I couldn't resist but looking at your Christmas decorations, this fixture would make it look like a winter wonderland :)

Perhaps Darzy could add to this but the fixture would not be in view from the formal dining room because of the height of the ceiling. I can't tell from the photo but is that chandelier aged silver or bright silver? Metal arms or glass arms?

The LR chandelier will be above your DR ceiling and will have their separate spaces. As long as you get a chandelier that is traditional or transitional it will look great.

Quite welcome. And yes it is. What's nice about it is the symmetry - 52" wide a 46" high. Really fills a large space nicely. Also I agree with your thoughts on a dimmer - that is a must, especially for any fixture of this size.

Gorgeous home! It looks so cozy (and must be-- even the dog is snoozing on the couch)! A beautiful grand chandelier in the center of the living space, and a smaller chandelier or pendant/lantern style fixture to match over the doorway would be just what you need!

Perhaps with the warm tones you have in there now, you can go with a bronze finish-- and maybe accentuate one or both fixtures with some crystals to bring out the chandelier you have in the dining. Each room has its own character and personality-- I don't think that the dining room fixture would at all compete with any of the others (that fixture is magnificent).

We've attached some ideas for multi-tier chandeliers for the living room. Check them out and let us know if you have any questions or would like some more recommendations!

    Thank you,

What about a large lantern shaped, more modern light. I think it would really match your decor. This one is from Lantern & Scroll (find them on here or Facebook). They are super helpful you could email them for their advice. I know they can do crazy custom sizes as well.

When selecting a light fixture 60% or more of the light produced should be functional. Fixtures that broadcast light in directions that is not needed are wasting your energy dollars. Consider the shade, glass and light source (bulbs) while selecting fixtures. Large rooms should have multiple light sources.
