Light cupboards would be my choice. Also a new light fixture to brighten up the place. It is too dark for my taste.

light countertops- granite- then get new updated knobs. these two changes alone in your kitchen will look like new cabinets and all !

Go with light cabinets. You have a deep, dark look right now with light from one window.
Would keep counters light too.

To change the colour of these cabinets would be simple.

Light cabinets. New lighting. Those would be my top priorities here.

Painted cabinets are not as durable as glazed. You could change it and make it lighter without painting it.

If you have vinyl floor and would like a cheap update that looks great, check out formica! It's come a long way. This one looks like wood but you could do other looks. I agree with Horrocks to lighten with glaze instead of painting.

Actually, I think granite might be overkill with the cabinets and vinyl floor. I think "like kind" materials look great together. I fear if you get granite, it may accentuate the fact the cabinets could use an update. With formica, it will look like intentional "vintage chic". :)

My old cabinets were similar to these. I painted them, and then updated about 5-6yrs later, and they were fine. Paint held up well. I cleaned them first with TSP. The only thing I regretted was not removing hardware from middle and filling holes. Its a dated look, and I found I didn't use the handles to open doors anyway that way but rather grabbed the corner of door and that left fingerprints.

If you used a Formica or other similar material for the countertops you could probably come close to affording new cabinets. Yes I know that it is sacrilege not to use the incredibly expensive stone countertops but new cabinets do more for a room than garish granite.

BTW...pay a little more for the faucet/sink for beauty and quality. The jewelry makes a big statement.

oh! Are you replacing the floor? What type/color are you going to do?

I think light cabinets would look better too. I'd also change the placement of the door pulls. Is it me, or is that a strange place to put them?

If you replace floors, I would just pick another vinyl if you are going to update cabinets in the future. Don't spend the money on stone or hardwood, because you may change cabinet configuration, and not be able to patch in floor.
