Need help with backsplash

Just got new granite. Can't seem to decide on backsplash. The area above the small counter would be easy but There is a very large area over the sink to contend with. I want something interesting to look at but not something I will get tired of or will be outdated soon. Granite has sparkles in it. I can't find any inspiration pictures with this color cabinet and we're not changing them...might be switching to stainless appliances though they're not my favorite. I think they would look better though

If you do a white backsplash, the white appliances would make total sense. I like white appliances, actually -- reminds me of vintage appliances when white was The Color. You could play that up further with white beadboard as a backsplash maybe. White subway tile would also be lovely. (BTW, I also have maple cabinets and floors that ended up roughly the same color. I break that up with kitchen rugs.)

Since you don't have much area for a splash, I think I would encourage you to use something pretty quiet and as similar as you can get it to the wall finish. Otherwise, whatever you introduce will feel like a separate object in the room, and your room is already pretty visually active.

I had considered a travertine? Maybe subway tile shape or 2x2 squares? It seems to be pretty mild but not boring. The granite is very busy. will be changing the paint but was waiting till I picked out the backsplash. Since the kitchen is part of a greatroom I won't be going too bold, but it needs updated. Would you go all the way up above the sink with the tile?

The bar stools are temporary. I am thinking something darker and with backs, to contrast with all the 'sameness' of the existing maple floors and cabinets. Any opinions?

Cream subway tiles. I would go way above the sink with the backsplash. I like the idea of darker barstools.

Perhaps some type of tile medallion or design above the sink as a focal point? Then you can use subway, glass, or travertine for the rest. The white appliances are fine.

Why not consider a subtle neutral porcelain subway tile. Some have nice crackled glazing to add interest and with a light colored grout it will give a pop while still blending well with the other elements in the space.

Thank you so much. You guys are great! I've been reading your posts and looking at the space with a new set of eyes. I am going out today to look for some new tile samples. I'll be keeping all your suggestions in mind. Can't wait to see what I find. :D

Have you heard of a "Trompe L'oeil"? The design can be changed when the mood strikes you. I'm planning one for above a sink in my back yard entry way. I'm taking pictures of seasonal views would look like if there really was a window there. Then I plan on enlarging and framing with an old window frame so it will be like looking out a window at a favorite view.

I think using a good amount of white in whatever you choose for the backsplash will work well with the white appliances. But you have an opportunity to do some sort of cool feature in that larger spot over the sink. I'm interested to see what ideas you have from your next round of tile shopping.
I really like your granite, and what a lovely view outside your windows!

I would go with a neural creamy tile too. Before my kitchen Reno my sink faced a wall like yours. I put a large mirror there. It reflected light from the windows across the room and also allowed me to talk to people in the kitchen by looking at them in the mirror rather awkwardly trying to turn around to face them. 2 of my neighbors did the same after they saw mine.

Try botticino (sp) tile. Sticking with natural works best with granite. The botticino has nice minimal variation in color. Good luck!!

A big mosaic rooster would look great above the stove...kind of goes with the country look of your cabinets:)

It's taken me a year and a half, but finally got the backsplash done and appliances changed out. big improvement!. I will be making a separate post for some advice on paint colors. Thanks to all who helped me along the way
