from Ranch to Craftsman

As the Owners of the only Ranch style home on a traditional street, our clients' primary objective was to remodel their front elevation to make it more in keeping with the Craftsman neighborhood, while redoing the entire floor plan.

The tight construction budget and City's zoning restrictions dictated reuse of the existing foundation and exterior walls, which left about a six-foot deep zone in which to execute a small front addition with traditional features reminiscent of the Craftsman style. Reusing the existing entry walk while tying it in to a series of new terraces and landings designed by Studio S Squared further stretched the tight budget.

A rear addition expanded the bedroom and bathroom count, while the front of the house was opened up to allow for a modified great room concept.

From someone living in a Craftsman Bungalow....BRAVO!!! This is adorable. It doesn't look fake or contrived.

Love the low rooflines, the rafter tails and the pergola over the porch too. The stacked stone along the walkway is perfect too.

Man...I'd kill for that driveway! Green with envy, baby!

Yes...did they change anything in the interior...or is it still ranch-like?

The new craftsman styling architecture is charming. nicely done, especially on a tight budget. From my viewpoint the landscape architecture doesn't match the lovely quality of the architecture and a modest amount of money could have been saved by not introducing the stucco stone columns and the paver stone driveway. The stucco stone cheapens the sense of entry and when paired with the patterend driveway pavers , it is just too much mismatched pattern. .. a case when less would have been more.

Is this the same house...because the house next door has changed radically...from a 2 story to 1 story with a different tree in the backyard and chimney.

Wow! An absolutely marvelous transformation. I do agree somewhat with Derviss Design though; less might be more in this case.

Overall, very nice, but my eyes cannot get past the awfully overdone pillars. They do not go aesthetically with a craftman style design intent and really dominate the overall facade. I can imagine how amazing it could look if they were to be removed, or at least toned down and simplifed.

Thanks all for the positive comments and constructive criticism, both are appreciated. There are pics of the interior on our Houzz page. The house is in Saratoga, CA.

The interiors strayed quite far from our design intent due to Owner changes, the exterior stayed pretty true as you can see from the 3d views we did during design.
