Staircase renovation

This reno was in stages. First we painted the stairs, then, some years later when we saved up for new kitchen and first floor flooring we did the stairs, removing the carpet. Presently there is a Christmas tree there, but after the holiday, what should I put under the stairs? I eventually bought a rectangular rug, only because I couldn't find a good round. But I think a round shape is better. Any inspiring ideas or pictures?

Wow, great transformation! I like the rectangular rug. How about a small round pedestal table in the curve topped with an amazing large vase etc.

    Great job!!

I like the idea of the square rug, but one more the size of the blue one you had (a little larger)

    Also

-based on your idea book, you are looking for a more updated style. How about something like photos

-finally, the rug you have is too dark to show against the floor

I like this idea for your front hall. The setting is too traditional for the way you are going, but the idea, I think a longer, more oval table would be better than a round one, because the shape of that area is more an arc of an oval as opposed to an arc of a circle.

I cannot see the full front hall, but it looks as if they used a rectangular rug, sort of ignoring the staircase area. This way, they were able to sort of incorporate the chair and table into the rug area.

I like this idea, but it depends on where your front door is.

(We replaced the vinyl with hardwood which is under the area rug. The front door faces the stairs with LR on the left and office on the right.)
Like the inspiration photos, and the lamp on the oval table. I will be able to do that because I am removing the light fixture. I can see now that the rug is a bit dark. I'm wondering if I should attempt to hang art, or photos, on the stair wall. Thanks for the comments.

Stunning transformation. Pretty rug but it does seem too dark and a little too small. I like cdrdesign's idea and photo of an oval table. Did you stain the oak dark on the stairway bannister or replace?

I had it painted a very dark, (almost black) brown. I'll look for an oval table after the holiday, and keep my eyes peeled for a brighter, less traditional rug.

I don't think I would hang anything on the stairway wall. I like the clean look of it empty.

Another consideration that I often recommend for halls is Flor. It is tile carpeting that you can configure in any way you want.

I think Lasting Grateness would be nice for your hall. Many other options.

You could do a rectangle in the front area and then stagger the tiles on the curved area where the table and chair will be. Like this: (actually All Dolled up would be a good choice for your hall also).

Flor is a very interesting product. Like your suggestions. My heart went pitter patter for heavy petal for my bedroom. But that's another discussion. Focus. Focus.
Thanks for your comments. Just as well on the wall. The kids cruise there.

This is the other side of the room. I need a rug at the door as well. I thought getting two was too match-y match-y so I got a complementary one. How would you handle that? Should I just have one at the front door?
(Piano and tree is there only temporarily because the Christmas tree is in the piano's spot.) With out the rug there it is a nice dance floor for the season. (Really!)

I do think you need two rugs and agree matching is too much. Your instincts are right on. What a wonderful bannister to decorate for Christmas.

Actually love your piano there! Is it a baby grand? Looks great in that space. Love how you've decorated it.

Little table---looking very lonely and can you just remove it?

Curio----would need to see large pic of front space, but looking unbalanced with curio on one side.

Rug---that is why I like Flor for front halls. Front halls are often oddly shaped. You put a rug in one portion and it ignores the other portions and chops up the space. You lay down several matching rugs and it looks chopped up. You lay down several unmatching rugs-----even worse.

    More

Having no rug is certainly an option. I wish you would have applied the wood up to the front door.

An idea is to buy Flor or actually you could have a carpet place cut a piece of carpet. I would get something low pile and simply buy a piece that is fairly plain and matches the color of the wood. I would get it cut the size of your entire front area.

I have repurposed that table elsewhere. I agree that hardwood to the door would have been visually more appealing. We were thinking about function and thought something more water tolerant was called for there. Thanks for your helpful comments.

(With reference to another discussion board, I'll still use a designer. However, Houzz has it's place, and it's fun. Thanks!)

What a great transformation. I see you don't have a console near your main entrance. My front door console is very practical for me. I use it to throw my keys, envelops, notes, etc

While the piano looks great there, I think a longer table than what you had originally will be useful too. See these photos:
