Where would you put backsplash tiling in this kitchen?

I bought beveled white subway tiles to be used as a backsplash in this kitchen. I purchased 30 square feet, which is more than enough. (I like kitchens that have all-over tiling but my mom and the contractor were strongly against it so I didn't buy enough for the entire kitchen.)

Given that, where would you put my 30 sq ft of tiling?

Also, I'm thinking about running the tiling vertically instead of horizontally. My ceilings are only 8 ft high so would that be a bad idea?

First issue is the range. The tile should wrap the range top where the walls fold around it. There should be nothing flammable within 12" of either side of the range.

Because this is a small space it would be easy for it to become too busy. I'd recommend using the subway tile horizontally just in the space between the cabinets and counter but not behind the refrigerator and also on the right wall since there is no backsplash there. I'd also recommend a grout the same color as the tile.

I like the idea of tiling the entire backwall (where sink/fridge/stove is located). I'd take it from the counter all the way to the ceiling. A gray or black grout would give it a more defined look against the white cabinets. Best!

I'd make a feature wall with the backsplash... Door counter to ceiling on the main wall with cabinet and sink. Then on the other 2 walls beside paint it a lighter tone from the back splash...this will give more definition to cupboards, lines of the wall and make the backsplash pop

Put it behind all your counters; more than that may be too much.

@Wiese - I love the idea of tiling above the cabinets. I think I will do this! (The rest of the backwall is also getting tiled).

@eagledzines - Indeed everything around my range top to bottom will be tiled. I'll go with horizontal. I'm also going to do a white grout.

All - as an update, turned out the 30 sq ft was just enough to tile the back wall and the walls hugging the oven and that's it.

So no over the cabinets.

Why don't you add a small tile mural in the area above the sink and use the other tile for everywhere else

@anne - I am! It doesn't look too shabby :)

@Alicia - I just don't think there's nearly enough space for something like that. There's about 16 inches from the counter to the start of the cabinet.

one 12x12 tile with a beautiful painting transferred onto it would be lovely and then frame it with 1/2" tile
