I hang the bar's at what looks right in the room. I try the 48 inches and if does not look the best in the room it could go up or down a few inches.

You've got to use common sense here. Your towel bars need to be high enough that the towels don't drag on the floor and low enough that you can easily reach to put the towel back after use esp. if they're stacked over other bars. Most of all they should be an arms reach from the shower or tub.

Hi leelee, did you think I was asking whether to put the bar 1" off the floor, or 10 feet above ground, or 20 feet from the shower ? Of course, in addition to all the obvious criteria, I'm wondering if there are any industry norms.

Hang what looks right to you. Ceiling hts would come I to play. 36-44" is standard.

Hi William, Travis, thank you. I ended up going by feel, without measuring the exact height. Two days later (today), I measured the height out of curiosity and found out it's 44" ! :)

towel rings are 25-26" above a 36" counter or 62" or so from floor

its better for longer towels as well

Just measured for my installation, taking into account all the helpful comments here, and I found 53" to be perfect! And the comment that a towel ring is 63" from floor was dead on in my circumstance.

Anything below 56" looks off to me. Unless kids' bathroom.

If one intends on hanging any art, photos etc., in the bathroom above the towel bar(s), then a towel bar at 56 - 58” is too high. When placing any photos or art on the wall, the center should be at eye level. Having a towel bar at 56+ inches would place your hangings far too high. 48” for towel bars would be the correct placement, unless you have very small children, then lower the bar so it is easy for them to use it.
