Your kitchen sounds gorgeous! Yes, the backsplash is a basic hand made white subway tile. It sounds like that would be pretty in your kitchen too- stone or something more ornate may detract from the chic, rustic simplicity it sounds like you are going for. As you may be able to see from some of our other photos we also have salvaged barn wood accent pieces throughout. I felt the clean, overly simple subway was the perfect foil for the rustic pieces throughout. Also, it allows you to bring in color and pattern in other, more temporary ways.

are they 3" by 6" ceramic with a beveled edge or flat? thanks!!! i am thinking right along your same lines and using subway tile but struggling between do i special order a 2" x 4" or go with the easier to find 3 x 6??? also thinking beveled edge but wondering what you did as it looks great. THANKS for any and all details you can share.

What grout color did you use? I think I like lighter grout with white subway tile (so more simple and less busyness), however is it harder to clean vs. darker grout?

In this case we used a very white white. To match the subway tiles almost exactly. Not a lot of upkeep here since it's a backsplash. In another bathroom we used the same white subway tile but a dark grey grout. very industrial cool feel. And yes, less issues with keeping it clean. But again, for a backsplash, the white grout has not been an issue at all.
