Because you have a blank slate, you could do something in a neural solid with texture for interest. With a neutral you can have fun with changing out your pillow covers with holidays and seasons. Maybe something a bit darker than your sofa to ground that space? Lighter would work too. What color are your walls and sofa? Gray?

Gray is a neutral color. You may choose almost anything for the wall. Depends how adventurous or classy you feel about your decor.

I think you should look at your living room and see what the color scheme is. Then you look at rugs that match that scheme. Or you could go with your favorite color and do something that presents you as a person.
