It is much better to plan for a paddle fan and not use one than the other way around. Paddle fans require a more structural mounting system, but the same box can be used for a standard fixture. If you end up with two switches to the regular light fixture, find one with a night light, or make one of the bulbs turn on separately. I personally prefer paddle fans in the summer, but the look depends on the ceiling height and the model of fan.

Yes they can be changed to reg. light if you don't want fans. If living in a warm climate fans may be way to go. I would also have some recessed lights put in also.

better have the structure for the fan and then change if you want. Like others mentioned, if you need the fans, have them. There are some nice ones. If you don't need them, have a nice light fixture together with some recess lighting.

Totally agree - perhaps consider recessed pot lights, in addition to the fan - if you then change your mind and remove the fan, you can always install a chandelier or more interesting ceiling fixture to allow a layered lighting approach.

There are some very nice fans out there and since I will be able to change them later if I decide I dont need them and or dont like them, I am going to go ahead and install the fans with light kits. We didnt put the recessed lighting in the bedrooms. I appreciate the suggestions and comments. Thank you for the feedback!

Hi, a fan with a light kit really adds a level of functionality to the room. On hot days fans are great but don't forget they can also be reversed in winter to recirculate warm air from the top of the room. A ceiling fan can save you money on heating and electricity but they also can look amazing. A ceiling fan with light kit serves 2 purposes whereas just a light fixture only offers light. You didn't really mention any particular style you like but here are a few nice ceiling fans with light kit.

We are in Colorado pretty warm summers here.

When we visit family in Colorado, we wish there were ceiling fans everywhere. We have them everywhere in the South, and can't understand why they're not in CO homes.

I find that most people like a fan in the bedroom. I have a lake home, and the guests just keep coming for overnight visits, and one can't set the thermostat to suit everyone. Since I own the house, I set it, and everyone has a fan to use

Fans are great. You can get cooling in summer, pull the warm air from the ceiing in the winter (most fans can be reversed to do that) and Just In Case Your Other Half Ate Refried Beans For Supper, you can survive.... :) It is much nicer to have a ceiling fan and not use it than not have one and need it. Just remember to dust up there a few times a year, the topsides of those fins can get FILTHY.

Oh I had ceiling fans and used them when I lived in Colorado on the Front Range. Where I am now I couldn't live without them and use them year-round!

Hi, I live in Sydney Australia. Today it was 37 degrees celcius. We have central air conditioning/heating in our home. After living here for 8 years I finally gave in and moved my fav light from the master bedroom to the study. I had a remote controlled ceiling fan installed and 6 halogen down lights which are also controlled by the same remote. I thought I would hate the look but I don't notice it and the fan has been a welcome addition on those very hot nights. Having the air on is not economical at nights as we only use 1 room downstairs. I have since put ceiling fans in the kids rooms with separate lights. Happy family!
