Although the kitchen configuration looks good on the plan, it doesn't offer a very 'nice' dining area with the numerous openings and access.

What is the space directly adjacent to the kitchen? Is that a pantry? i.e on the left side?

The room adjacent at the top of the plan is a room that we will most likely use for a kids play room. At the bottom of the plan is where you walk in from the garage to the house (mud room).

I think the mudrooom off the garage has a deleterious effect on the eating area. If it were my house, I would move that closet to be adjacent to the front hall, minimize the garage entry, and expand the 10' wide room presently to its left into the space.
I also think that the rooms are small, considering the center-hall design; that is, if you could modify the run of stairs, eliminating part of the long center hallway, you would gain living space.
Bottom line, I think it would be a good idea to work on the plan further.
