Need help decorating formal living room with raspberry furniture!

Happy New Year! I have a raspberry couch, chair and ottoman in my formal living room and would love some suggestions on how to make the space more contemporary while keeping the furniture. Up until now I have mixed the raspberry with gold tones but the room feels heavy and very traditional and my taste leans to more contemporary now. I am considering black and white or silver/gray or maybe turquoise accents. I have a canvas that I brought (see pic) that has many colors in it and I've considered pulling in some of those (the canvas is a Home Goods find so if it does not work out, I'm OK with returning it too). I am having a really tough time deciding on the best wall color, area rug, tables etc. to work with the color. Thank you!

I think an overall strategy would be to make the aesthetic of the room more crisp and airy. The sofa and chair have an interesting shape, and I think the ottoman and throw pillows are too much of a good thing. I would try painting the walls white and using white window treatments and leaving some space around your furnishings. The artwork is more in keeping with the voluptuous aesthetic you had going before, so, I think I would look for something else that had some white space in it. In general, you may be surprised at the difference that original artwork makes in a space - find out who your local artists are and where they show their work, or try looking on saatchi or artslant or even etsy.

Thank you. I agree with going the crisp and airy route! Any thoughts on other colors to introduce or on a coffee table or area rug?

This photo shows chairs and sofa matching and they came back with a soft gray and off-white scheme which also is very effective and also it's more contemporary.

I like using white, too or a light icy gray. This picture is fun with the wild rug. I love the raspberry accent wall. Could you do that?

Light, off white walls would be great. I would also paint the legs of the furniture black or expresso.

The suggestions above show the surrounding furnishings being light in color and very simple in their configuration. I think that's a good way to go. You might also consider painting or re-staining the legs of your furnishings in a darker color - black or nearly so. Re: rugs - I tend to lean toward more traditional oriental or tribal rugs. In your case, I think I would look at something that was not floral, just because the furnishings are so feminine it seems like it would be good to have something that tended in the other direction to balance it out.

I would use all different shades of grey to set off the furniture. Perhaps a light grey such as BM revere pewter for the walls and then use darker grey in accessories. I would go on etsy to look at art.

I am learning how to run this new PC - the old iMac no longer works - so please excuse any glitches?

Love your furniture! Agree that the legs should be switched for new dark wood. Not sure if you would be happy with painted legs since you can always tell. They are available and simply screw into the same holes the old ones used.

Here is a fun rug that works well with your painting. This, plus gray walls, some art glass, simple draperies, Rug from "Rugs Direct" contemporary collection, Safavieh design NAN141.

I'm exhausted from trying to figure this PC picture program out so I can post more pix after I have recovered! Just glad I got this far! thanks!

Hi, mrodri. Another option for you is the eclectic glam avenue with deep charcoal walls, a fluffy shag rug and reflective elements. A different look than the crisp and airy, but something to consider. Love the raspberry!

Hi mrodri! I love the icy gray color that was suggested for the walls. I think your furniture looks more like a dark plum color on my screen, which I love! If so, I think the light gray color is a tried and true companion with that color. You can also throw in some cream as the third color (unless you want lots of color -- then perhaps yellow, which works well with gray and purple. If you like the "glam" look, you might like some mirrored side cabinets with drawers (more storage). If you lean more towards the transitional look, either dark wood or even perhaps an iron and glass coffee table. It is really a matter of personal preference -- just throwing some ideas out there for you to mull over. Also, some nice gray and cream geometric curtains (overstock has some) would look nice and more contemporary.

Mrodri, in looking at all these stunning rooms that Houzzers have come up with to help you with your dilemma, I am beginning to covet your raspberry furniture!! What a wonderful jumping off point to a great room! Please let us know what you decide?

Will do! There are two looks that I really like. 1. using white and icy gray tones. 2. the bottom right pic sent by Carole (it has the dark blue in the rug and chair yet there is still enough white in the room to make it feel airy).

I love that room also. Seems the common thread is that a creamy white color on the walls is the key. Then you can go from there with the great colors.
