Kathryn, I JUST re-did my own bedroom, and similarly we too had a sleigh bed which in my opinion overtook our room. Eventually, my husband realized it too. Our room was simply just too small for such a grand piece of furniture that could not be appreciated in such a small space. Once we sold the bed and lived on just the box spring and mattress we felt we had given ourselves much more needed space, and then we (I mainly) went ahead and painted. The bed eventually got a frame, but my hope is that my husband will build a simple modern frame that doesn't take up too much room. For just a few dollars you can take out the mirrors (very 70's) and replace them with doors of your choosing. Something with clean lines. I painted my room a warm white to match a lot of wood detailing. I also painted over birch wainscotting which I felt overwhelmed my room, made it look way smaller and also did not contribute to the calm and serene environment a bedroom should possess. So, leaving just the top of the wainscotting which is a neutral pine color, together with other wood details gave the room a very modern and clean almost Japanese look to it. I would also consider removing the mirror from the dresser, and if you must have the TV in the room (we do) put that on the low dresser, and move the highboy somewhere else to open up that wall. You don't want all of the furniture lined up in a row like that. It looks like a warehouse. i've got the same window treatments in my bedroom but the difference is we have wood moulding around it so that it looks finished. For this bedroom I would strongly consider getting a simple curtain rod and either a long drape (just one) which can be opened up to one side during the day, and then swept across at night. It can be a pattern with bold color (or not) and this will allow you to keep the paint color neutral along with neutral bedding with hints of color, ie pillows. I prefer a monotone color scheme because a bedroom should be calming. Choose matching night table lamps but make sure they're not too big and overpowering. I found two lamps on ebay and and also got my shades on ebay as well. They had to be a certain height because I had a sloped ceiling to deal with. Two runner rugs along side the bed also adds a detail and a sense of uniformity. Lastly I would change out the hanging lamp over the bed to something soft, and even romantic, like a drum shade pendant or, something with glass but not too big! I know, I gave you an eyeful.
