It is just a clear varnish on natural oak.

If there weren't already oak flooring and you were starting from scratch, what flooring would you envision with this oak? I have a major amount of a similar honey oak in my kitchen and beyond, and am deciding whether to "de-oak" or work around it. Given the extent of the oak in my house, and the price of painting it all, I may keep it, and that drives other decisions, including flooring. The current kitchen flooring is ready to be replaced, so it's all up for grabs.

I, too, have similar oak cabinets and we are now ready to put new flooring down. I am thinking of going with a medium gray wood floor. The photo of the sample doesn't really show the washed gray look. We will also put in new countertops. Any suggestions? Thank you.

@homelaura- not sure if I ever answered you. If I were doing this home from scratch, I would likely put in a natural walnut floor or would make the oak floor a dark walnut color. You could also use a great porcelain tile, which is very durable for kitchen use. I would stay away from ceramic as it is too brittle for how much you will drop on it (cans and dishes=dents and cracks). Depending on the look of your kitchen, you could use a natural stone like travertine or marble. They will hold up well and will change and patina over time. They are a little higher maintenance overall.
