Cover the cupboards with fabric, directly on the door, not as drapes.
Decoupage the cupboard doors using scrapbook paper, or wallpaper.
Prime them, and paint them

If they are staying, make them look so nice that they look like they belong in the room.

Glad you like the fabric as much as I do. I'd love to create a room using that as inspiration.

Can you post a close-up pic or two showing the damage on the wardrobes? It would help to see what could be done to make those drapes unnecessary.

Handymam, thanks! I had wallpaper on the doors before, it doesn't stick, even with wallpaper paste and after sanding them! A lot of work with no results :( I painted them black once, yuk. I thought about buying some wood veneer but I could only do the doors and I'm not sure if that would work. And I don't know if my skill level is high enough! I know I need to replace them but just can't right now.

Rina, I was thinking....fabricguru has 15 yards of that fabric available. If I recovered the headboard AND made cupboard curtains to match, would that work? Or too much?

Prime them with a bonding type primer first and then use a tacky spray adhesive. That should hold.

How about gluing on some seagrass type fabric on the front of the wardrobes and paint the sides dark.

Here is a radical thought. Put the bed under the window with the screen behind it.

I would not introduce a bunch of floral fabric in this room or you will just be right back where you are now. I would keep it neutral. With the shoji screen keep the room organic.

Unfortunately the screen must stay exactly where it is, it's hiding the portable air conditioner. The air conditioner is a MUST with summer temps at 116F!

No you wouldn't. The headboard can go up past the window. Sheers over the window, solid drapes covering the wall beyond the windows, all hung from the ceiling.

Can you show what he ac looks like? There may be a better way to disguise it than the screen.

To me, from these pics, the metal shelves with the pink storage boxes is what is really contributing to the juvenile vibe in the room. Kinda looks like that's toy storage or something. I'd look for an inexpensive white (or maybe black like your nightstand) shelving unit or dresser to replace it, I think that might help the most with the overall vibe. You could try Ikea if you have one around, or Target. And maybe move Teddy to the nightstand, he might make the room look less like "a child's room" if he's hanging out under that mod lamp. :-) And I personally don't mind those cabinets, I think the drapes are very clever! Especially if you're leaning more toward cottage-y. Good luck!

Ok, here's what I've done. I had some charcoal gray tweed curtains in the spare room and I moved them into my room. Damn near killed myself on the stepstool but that's another story. I have enough of that fabric left over that I can recover the headboard and move it under the window. Very coordinated, no?

The metal rack with the pink bins is the bottom half of a baker's rack, I removed the top half because it was too kitchen-y. I can move that by itself to where the headboard is now and keep the two cupboards where they are, just move them closer together.

Does that make sense? The curtains are a bit masculine which cancelled out some of the over-femininity of the room.

Hi Charleee. No, I don't think that pink and white is the best you could go for. (Agree with Margo there!) I think if you used the floral on the headboard, (disagree with Margo there!) you could derive a subtle colour or neutral from it for the walls. Together this community could find a solution for the wardrobes, paint or wallpaper -- don't worry, everything can be bullied into accepting paint or wallpaper or something. And then, we need to look at bringing the dressing table in line. Find the perfect place for Mr Teddybear (I agree, nobody would get such a gorgeous teddybear away from me!), sort out the drapes (easy peasy). Maybe a rug if you need one. Maybe paint your side tables. Art, etc, bits and pieces. It follows with beautiful logic. Believe!

You need to make one big decision: I'm going with this. Then you go from there, step by step to build up your plan. Then you execute your plan.

Oh, yes, harking back -- I think using the floral on the headboard and cupboard curtains would definitely be too much. Anyway I think your aim should be to get rid of the cupboard curtains and make the cupboards -- and the baker's rack/dressing table -- look good in a cleaner, more elegant room. More simplicity. I see the the floral and the teddy bear as the two "look at me" elements in the room, everything else just blending.

Charlee, I made that colour with my Paint program. I'm a terrible cheat. But there are people online who could tell you what colours available approximate that -- you're in the US, right? I'm in South Africa. A great thing you can do if the colour shows well on any mobile device you have is take it your paint supplier and say "find me this!" Then you'd have to get a few sample pots to play with to make sure you get what you want and that it looks good in your room in all lights. (You paint good solid boards with a couple of coats and look at them in the room, night and day, to make sure you're happy.)
