Twenty lovely south facing acres that are ocean tempered to at least zone 10a, where I can build my bale house and dig three or four large walipini for my plants; and have an artesian clean well to provide all the water I need for my water features and ponds; with all the solar installed and the horizontal wind turbine so I didn't have to worry about on-grid. There I could retire to live peacefully with a more minimal carbon footprint... the observatory in a darksky location with my one meter nearby so I can sit in my office and joystick my observing (no more feeding skeeters or -35 plus windchill with graphite lubricant and frostbite for this gal!) and a couple more outbuildings to house hobby stuff so my house could be an efficient 1300 or so square feet and easier to keep clean!. All of this built by somebody else while I watched! A sewing and fabric crafts in one building, with a cutting table that never got buried by anything; another with the stained glass and lampworking, one more with the wood tools and one six stall garage with an attached small engine shop.

I would like a home with some negative air pressure. I'm thinking this would pull all the dust out before it landed. Maybe something where the floors would always be clean. And if there is a way to automatically put everything away when it's not bing used. Wow my life would be so much easier, what would I do with all that time:-)

My basement would have one wall that was completely plexiglass with either a giant aquarium on the whole wall or it could be the view of the swimming pool and you could see the people swimming in it. But I think the aquarium with exotic fish would be the coolest. Next! I want a two lane bowling alley in my basement with a refreshment bar and the pool table near by, Then on the opposite end closed off, would be a real life like Art Deco style movie theater. And of course the finest looking bathroom on planet earth with High tech features with automatic everything from wiping to self cleaning toilet. Plus a wine celler made of gorgeous stone with arched doorway. Then a special hidden wall of the same stone that I could go to for my own complete privacy and serenity. I could also keep my favorite Collectibles in there with a walk in safe.

I really want a bathroom like this one in the photo.

Secret passageway!!!

A fully sealed room made of glass, where I could pressurize it to positive g forces - so I could float around the room like in an aircraft during a noseover. Or like space, except there would be plenty of air to breath.

I would like a house where there is a mechanical room with the a/c heat and water heater in the basement and the washer and dryer in the basement with a laundry chute from the bedrooms. An elevator to take the clean clothes up to the bedrooms. A private library.

A self-cleaning home .... box up a few things; push a button, leave: come home, all is sparkling clean. This would include clean windows, baseboards, walls .. EVERYTHING!!

I would like an atrium and a bird watching tower.

I would give my husband the brew room of his dreams.

A jungle room. Tall tree house hidden high in the trees. Flowing river with a waterfall I can swim in. Breathtaking flowers everywhere. All under a glass canopy - that opens.

My dream since I was a child has been for my own English Elizabethan country house on 50 acres in the rolling English countryside that looks authentically old, but is completely eco-friendly and energy efficient, built to my own design with stone mullion windows, gorgeous bedroom suites for each member of my family, a stunning inside pool, Tudor kitchen, a lift, and two towers for the kids to sleep in. Rose gardens, and a huge basement family room suite with many areas for all of us to be entertained on those numerous rainy days. I have the floorplan all designed.

I'd be happy to have my roof scraped, primed & repainted...along with all the woodwork on the outside of my house.

my dream is a huge maintenance free deck on the back that has french doors opening from the dining room, and some sort of privacy feature so the too close neighbors can't see everything on the deck,a beautiful outdoor dining table and chairs( no umbrella tho)and the grill up on it with the potting bench my dad made me converted to a buffet server for holding outdoor dishes,etc, and under the deck a room that is all season but has screens so can open the windows in nice weather and a hot tub or some sort of recreational feature( a bar, nice seating, a good stereo system for dancing...?)and a winding ,multilevel set of stairs that lead to deck from yard and to a door that opens into room ...prob a wall without windows towards one side for privacy, and a fully privacy fenced in yard...or at least two sides( one is done now)...a terraced back yard so I could plant redbud trees, &hydrangeas and a pond at the bottom of the terracing for Koi fish, a small screened in ( mosquitoes are bad here at times)gazebo at the top of the yard for summer nights out looking at the stars or watching thunderstorms without getting wet by the rain, raised beds for my roses,and a new patio with a fire feature out in yard with built in seating around it...

Acreage on a mointain-top, with a wind generator and the house built underground. A very long house with a long corridor behind the rooms and a window wall, looking out the other side of each room. on the hill side of the corridor would be all the house's systems.

Three or more car garage with DRIVE THRU DOORS---one in front and one in back so you don't EVER have to BACK OUT or IN! Mechanics lift as we like to work on cars and motorcycles. Motorcycle display area to fill with the ones we have---and the ones we want! Expansive workshop.

ELEVATOR! Handicapped person here! Haven't been in my basement for 6 YEARS! And guess where the LAUNDRY is???? So--either the elevator or a main floor laundry--either one works for me! LOL!

No grass! I hate grass! And all that time suck of the mowing!!!!!

And all of this needs to be in some place WARM with amazing scenery to ride in---a gurl CAN dream can't she??????

I visited a home on a golf estate in Durban (South Africa) a few years back. They had an underground wine cellar that looked straight into the swimming pool, with enough space to entertain guests.

I've always wanted to live in a stone tower on a mountain peak with a winding staircase to the top lined with ramps and platforms for my cats. It would have to be a James Bond sort of room with button to push for the bed to rise out of the floor or a desk or a table or a giant bathtub, for lights and music and for the secret room to open. It's secret, so I can't tell you what's in it or it won't be secret. There'd be a wide balcony to see for miles. There'd be a self-cleaning room for painting and pottery and sculpture. Don't forget the chef's kitchen with a self-filling pantry. Opposite the staircase is a winding slide down to a lapping pool in the bottom level, that's in the Caribbean, bright and sunny, aqua colored water, soft sand beach.

Even if i was making tons of money, I would still be an energy conversationalist because i "feel on principle" i shouldn't have to pay for what comes freely....yes, i'm referring to solar homes. The Sun heats our entire planet...surely it can heat our measely home

i would have an underground tunnel beneath our drive and a cheese cave built underneath the rock knoll on the other side of the driveway.

hmmm. poolside staff, for one...

In my fantasy home, there would be a humugous ingrouud pool with beautiful landscaping around it. threre would be a movie theatre, an elevator that would go through all 5 storices. I would want a roller skating rink, 4 bathrooms and plenty of extra bedrooms. maybe a hot tub and indoor pool with a sauna steam thing. (u know what i mean.) a jungle gym with many trampolines and square foam pits.

I want a huge shop where I can work on every project I ever imagined. I could then make scenery for the live theater next door which would have a retractable floor with a massive trampoline below it. Also need a 1/4 acre grotto style pool and a professional kitchen with a fully stocked walk-in and a 5000 bottle wine cellar. The living room would have to have unrestricted north light all the time and more plants than furniture. Needless to say, the weather must be perfect but variable and all the roads would be restricted to use by only my friends who would bring me whatever vehicle I would like to drive....
Or I could be happy with dshaviv's pocket house.

I would love a screened balcony off my master second floor bedroom with a bed there for summer time.

This elevator is in our dream for the future in our 3 story home. It can be installed beside the existing staircases beginning in the lower den, exiting beside the 2nd level living room staircase, or the third floor large, walk-in closet. We could also use another bedroom/bath and a quieter heating/AC system. Everything else is adequate, nicely done and cozy!

I would like to have a small house, a large library, and a greenhouse, all connected with rope bridges, with entrances in lofts

Self-cleaning windows and floors.

A laundry shoot to outerspace. I've done enough loads of wash in 50+ years and it's time to send it out! Hee hee

A house with lots of storage space where I can keep and find easily all the things that are dear to me-- my kids stuff when they were growing up,. my travel souvenirs, books etc. All have their proper place with proper labels and with controlled temperature so nothing will get damaged .

I have just added an addition to my house which I love, so I would love to have the $$ to May it off (it went over budget). Would love to have made the kitchen (which is now in the middle of the house) bigger for more counter space and a dishwasher. Right now I'm the dishwasher. I'd love to have the painting, landscaping and fencing of my dreams done and paid for, and to have the house (including all of the things mentioned in other self cleaning posts above, plus paper self organization) entirely self cleaning (or someone like the cabana boy posted above to do it full time). I would love to have everything off the grid and environmentally friendly. Also, a basement with higher ceilings and finished. Mine suits my height (I'm only 5'). I don't use it except for storage.but fixing it would raise the ultimate selling price (although I intend to stay in place). Same everything in the neighbourhood except no mosquitoes or pesky critters and temps ranging from lowest -10 in the winter to 25 in the summer (Celsius, of course).

Whew! I think that's it. Funny how once you start, you keep thinking of new things to add!

Would love the home hamletgirl described only placed on the smaller lot in the neighbourhood in which I currently live...and self-cleaning. PS, my house is already old, so I am partway there.

I would keep my house as is, but would drop it onto about 100 hectares of Colombian llanos where I could raise Paso Fino horses. The finest bloodlines are Colombian so I would have access to the best straight from the source! (Of course the whole ranch would have to be surrounded by razor wire and armed guards 24/7 to protect us from the FARC, so obviously this is just a dream.)

Jeannie: I had to laugh. Does not this article ask about our FANTASY home? Why, oh why, then, would you ask for photos? Many of the ideas I read about here--and there is some amazing creativity going on here--are not in existence, so it would be just a tad bit on the difficult side to provide a photograph.

I've been reading this column and others, along with a spy novel, so last night, in my dreams...

I (the hero) dragged a poor, brutalized hunk, not only out of danger, but through 4-foot snow drifts, in a forest to my hidden, underground lair, with automatic everything for survival, including artificial sunshine. Totally self-sustaining, it was a virtual mini-world, underground, to which my brave self took the hunk to nurse back to health. (picture it - me; chubby and not far south of 70; he; well, the traditional hunk) unfortunately, I woke up just as hunk was regaining consciousness - I'll never forgive that woodpecker. It was a terrific house, though.

Oh, want the subconscious will do!

In a fantasy house, I would like an indoor-outdoor swimming pool. There is a photo of one on Houzz. In real life, I would very pleased to have the pool pictured below, at a therapeutic temperature of 90F.

I have always thought it would be fun to have an entry to a secret house start in a tree trunk. Perhaps part of the house would be in the tree tops and part of the house underground, among the roots.
I think a labyrinth as part of the driveway hardscaping is a wonderful idea.

Buying this house as we speak (not even kidding) with 5 en suite beds,heated indoor pool all we need now is to build a basement movie theatre and add a baby grand piano in the entrance!! Not even kidding-this has always been the dream, so happy I could cry!
