Hi. I'd be really tempted to get rid of the built-in so the room would be more balanced and centred on your fireplace. Then add decorative features - art, free-standing bookcases, or whatever pleases you, on both sides.

Oh but I do love the built-in. :)

Since you loved the tree there, consider replacing it with a plant. That will add a great touch to the room in that corner.

Maybe consider painting the outlets the same color as your walls to make them blend in and fade away.

I agree with abbyjean to put a live plant there. A Bird of Paradise, or palm, etc. For $10 you can get a canned floor up light for the corner and will shine up the plant for a nice glow in the corner too.

I love the plant idea. It would have to be big and not require direct light, although that room gets very bright. Any photos that would inspire? :)

I agree with fellow Houzzers that a vertically placed art grouping and a large plant (3-4 feet tall in a large ceramic pot) will balance out the space and fill the empty corner.

A big palm is always my favorite! Have fun with choosing the pot for it, too, as that is one other way to add a little something to the room, too.

How about a plant?? Put the little white lights for mood lighting…:-)

you need a plant stand and something full with a little height, try a dieffenbechia or scheuffelera, they are easy to take care of and they let you know when they are thirsty because they gently droop. give em a little water and they always spring back to life. Another option is an orchid they do very well in low light situations and will add a splash of color (if you choose color or white) every three months with proper care.

also attached what the room looked like with the Christmas tree….we got a new red chair, the brown one will go elsewhere.

I would put a plant in the corner and add another (red) chair that's angled in that corner in front of it.

or chair, table, lamp and small plant.

I was just looking at the pic again and saw that there was a red chair in one pic and a black in the other…would the area next to the fireplace look too crowded with the black chair?? I like the red chair next to the leather couch as I like contrast but the red chair does seem a tad smaller than the black….cute room…how about adding some framed pictures in your built-in. Red frames??

Yes to everything, Susan! :) The brown chair is not going in that room so it won't over crowd. The red chair is slightly smaller but that's mostly because the ottoman hasn't come in yet. We needed the contrast. And definitely more to come on the built-in decor

A bird of paradise plant would look good, or a large, statement floor lamp? a big mirror might also look nice.

I LOVE red accents with your furniture and wall color! GREAT choice with the panels and chair!!! Hopefully you can find a ceramic pot for a nice big plant that incorporates those colors, too.

dasha...when anyone has suggested another chair in that corner, it doesn't have to be back in the corner....flanked on other side of fireplace like your red one is on the opposite side. With a plant or something behind IT. It would just cozy up your whole living arrangement....if that makes sense. Like this for example.

oh never mind......i see that the couch is a sectional...................maybe a smaller type chair like an interesting rocking chair would fit there? I'm not in the room, so it's hard to tell... :)

if not a matching red chair, maybe something with a fabric that incorporates all of your colors would be nice. Which to be honest, I would prefer the look of the 2 red chairs and curtain panel fabric like this for your room.

or for something more modern.......sure you could find an ikat print in your colors and maybe even introduce another color into your palette. :)

I personally, would fill the corner space with some lush greenery in a decorative planter.

we moved the chairs a bit more. and while we're not planning on keeping the dark brown one, what do you think of 2 chairs in front of the fireplace? i'm thinking 2 red chairs. DH is not fond of that idea at all…he wants greenery or the like in that corner. i rather like the 2 chair idea. :)

bernunit, this coffee table was in our living room and it's sort of a temporary solution for right now. the sectional is very dark/bulky…we wanted something light/airy for that space to not overcrowd it.

If this spot is where your Christmas tree went, will you put it there next year also? I am leaning towards a collection of art pieces on the wall approximately the same size to balance the built in bookcase or a large moveable plant. ( this has been suggested already by a few other posters) If you buy extra furniture to go there, where will you put the furniture next year when your Christmas tree needs to go up? Will you find a new place for your tree? Think ahead of the use and flow of your room.

I move my chair every Christmas for the tree............it's not a big deal. :)

I really like just the one red chair across from the red curtains. I also do not like a chair right at the end of the chaise....do not ask my why as I cannot even tell you. I really think a plant will be perfect and very easy to move when the tree goes up. Cheaper, too!!!

I would create a reading corner by nestling the chair a little further into the corner with your new ottoman in front.. then a pole lamp and small table...... a wall grouping in white frames on the wall to balance the bookcase

Wish I could do a rendering before forking over $$ on a new chair. Lol. DH doesn't want a chair in that corner by the window...says it's too much. :/

Can you move the sectional to other side with two red chairs under the window with a small accent table inbetween? Would there be rom then behind the sectional for a sofa table for lighting.

Rjanice, we have an open concept floor plan and moving the sectional would really block off the area between the kitchen and fam room. I know it's hard to tell because my pics only show the FR part.

I understand. The room looked big enough to carry it off. I like the red chair...my favorite color and all over my house. Plant seems to be the best choice. What about a big woven basket also with extra throws/pillows?

I would not put the basket by the plant, but it might look nice over on the other corner of the couch.

Red Antherium, prayer plant, and can't remember the name of the last plant but these are all very common and easy to care for. I worked in a nursery for a few years. if your local flowershop doesn't have these in stock they can be easily ordered. Also Walmart has started carrying good plants
