Some of the varieties of the heath and heathers in this photo will grow well in cold climates. I would suggest visiting a good Heather supplier's website and then cross referencing the various species with your growing zone and site conditions. Heathers like good drainage, a modestly good sunny spot and slightly acid soil. Look for a plant called Calluna vulgaris , a type of erica ,which is cold hardy. Also look up some of these other plants: Erica and Daboecia, Most all conifers do well cold climates such as Colorado.

I'm totally enamored with heathers this year, and am going to make a go of them in Rhode Island (zone 7). While we have a damp maritime climate, I am nervous about the heathers drying out, which seems to be their worst enemy and they don't seem to offer any outward signs until its too late! Our summers frequently have drought. I can't quite figure how to meet the frequently-stated needs of "quick-draining" and "consistently moist" I see online everywhere.

Any advice on balancing water needs for heather? Am I committing myself to an unforgiving watering scheme?
