The corner is inconsequential. The issue I see is that the built-in does not tie to the fireplace. This gives you a sense of needing to weight the smaller portion.

A suggestion would be to work towards incorporating the bookcase and fireplace such as the images I posted and the uncooperative corner will become a no-brainier in this balancing act.

To do this I would remove the crown molding on the bookcase and recreate it by extending it to the far end of the fireplace. Then tie that portion of the wall together in a textured background with the white.

Like the added chair and yes you can still do a plant or a tall thin vase with sticks. Curious if the chairs were reversed how it would look - might balance the red around the room better

Would you opt for 2 of the same chairs or different? I'm a classic girl...and while I love eclectic, not sure I can brave it. :)

Janet, we don't need more seating in that area. I totally agree, we need softness in that room. Will be getting more pollows and throws, too.

The chair doesn't look right to me. I think you need height.

I think the plant would be really nice in that corner, but I also think that chair is really out of place. It's facing away from the TV. I think it would look much better over by the side of the couch where the boy is on an angle, then maybe some green and red and tan accent pillows to pull together your wall color, your red in the chair and the drapes, and the green in the plant (if you put one over there.) Just my opinion :)

I really like the art sequence you have in your poll. I would choose to copy that. But I am not a fan of big plants in the house so I might not be the one to give advice.

Or maybe, put it on the same side as I said before, but have it facing the other side of the couch so your couch plus the chair complete a sort of rectangluar look and compliment the fireplace in the center and the shape of the couch as well. I don't know, just a suggestion! :)

If you move it toward the fireplace a titch, it will cover the higher outlet and almost the lower one. Maybe take down the mantle decoration now, too.

Nah! Not sure how a shorter one with a pic over it would look. A picture would compete with the tv and it might cut the plant off , too, when you look at it.

can't see all of your room. Could you center the sofa a tiny bit more with fireplace and red chair moved to corner but still sitting on rug. I don't think you need a shorter plant but maybe something on each side of your tv on mantle.

don't know how large this room is but I still say you could move sectional back some and have room for another chair in that corner and a nice floor lamp between it and end of fireplace

At first I was going to suggest a large plant.

After looking at the room and reading the comments, i have changed my mind. The red chair you have is "floating" to my eye. I would move it to the corner with a good reading lamp.

In front of the bookcase, put a large basket for the little one's board books.

another suggestion would be to place two white framed small pictures on wall with one above the other with chair and nice reading lamp in corner.

I think you still need another chair in front of bookcase to balance things out in the room

low and shallow depth custom shelves in the corner. Something to place a sentimental or two

I am keeping the chair in front of the bookcase, the corner is not much a "reading nook" because there is only one window and light comes in from the other windows. If I put a chair in the corner, I wonder if then the room will have an ackward balance?

Perhaps a toy area for the little one in the out-of-the-way corner? You could make it white to match the bookcase, or reddish to match the chair.

I would out a nice bar cart with either vintage decanters, or crystal decanters. They are called bar carts but you could use them for just about anything. They are very popular now. Hope this helps

Hi, What about magazine or book rack, you can put one of them in the corner and put flower or table lamp on it.
if flower / table lamp too risky for your sons, you can put their toys on it.
