Need Help Finishing my Living Room

The room measures about 19 x 11.5 feet. The back of the bookshelves and the wall is painted BM Dior Gray while the rest of the room is painted BM Gray Owl. I am leaning towards a gray and orange palette. I really don't know how to finish the room. I know I need a rug and lighting and also pillows. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I guess my style would be more of eclectic. I love color and pattern and I would like to inject a bit of that in my living room. Aside from doing double duty as my home office, I also use the space to do yoga.

I love what you have already done. The biggest issue I see are the open shelves on the office wall. I would use units with doors..something like these.. http://www.amazon.com/Home-Source-Industries-154BRD-Two-Door/dp/B001K31NB6

Or, at the very least change to units with upper shelves open and the lower portion with doors.

The desk area, move the bulletin board to just lower than where it is, or on the side of the right side cabinet. Add a piece of tall art above the monitor.

That said, I would look for a rug with gray, white, black, small amount of orange. Also, change out your solid gray pillows for patterned ones using gray & black & white..maybe a trellis pattern. Also change out lamp harp and shade to something much more contemporary. Add additional lighting..maybe a floor lamp. Maybe a pair of upholstered chairs..not to large, with maybe a wide gray & white stripe..and small orange pillows with pattern. Obviously artwork of your choice...large pieces.

Its a great space and you have a great starting point.

The lamps were hand-me-downs from my parents. I know it really doesn't work with the space so I'm temporarily using them for lighting. I am hoping to get an arc floor lamp.

Hey I just want to say I really like what you've done so far. I don't really have anything to add. One question, your Pan AM bag - is it new or original? I am kicking myself because I threw one like that out (colors reversed though) a couple years ago in a cleaning fit.

It is hard to see the color of the lamp, but it looks orang(ish) if it is, I would buy a large black or gray barrel lamp shade and harp to fit. It would look really great.

Im all for the units with doors and maybe a different lamp with a large shade

jn3334, I found the Pan Am in a Salvation Army store by my neighborhood. It was in mint condition.

I think you should get rid of the bulletin board entirely if you can, and put a great piece of abstract art there, with your oranges, grays, blacks, etc in it!
i think doors on the bookshelves would look better as well, as someone suggested above.
The arc floor lamp sounds great!

You've color blocked the books on the shelves but they're still too messy. Try arranging with 1/3 books, 1/3 decor and 1/3 open space, keeping your colors together. The shelves are a bit flimsy and thin looking. You could add trim pieces to beef it up until you can replace with some heavier gauge ones. Consider an arc floor lamp to hover above your fun coffee table. You can get a new cover for the butterfly chair to pick up on your color scheme.

Barbara, the lamp bases are actually red in color. I'm debating between these lamps from West Elm.

decoenthusiaste, I never knew that I could buy covers for my butterfly chair (a remnant from my dorm days). Will go hunting for one. Thank you!

If you want to introduce some other muted colors to your room, I really like these with the rust colored couch....and you would probably need some black thrown in as well with pillows.
A shag rug would look great in there as well!

So maybe change they gray pillow covers for these...

Some doors on the lower half of the bookcases would indeed look better. Move the books up (I like how you arranged them per color), so it looks full.
Or install larger doors to cover the entire wall when unused. It'll be more soothing.

The bookshelves are Billy bookshelves from IKEA. I can probably purchase door attachments for them.

A rug would help a ton. ANC j know this would be a lot of work. If you pulled out the computer area and painting the wall white and some other color stripes. Or zig zags whatever. Or just semi gloss white. It would make that area more out together and it's own space. Or wallpaper...

If you don't want to do that maybe a orange big cushion board in the space behind your computer. You can pin everything to it

    Grey or white rug?

rinqreation, I was also looking at the chelsea southwest rug from Joss and Main. I am partial to flatweave rugs since they are so easy to clean.

I actually like the lamps... At least you could just change the shades. Gives it a vintage feel

Have you thought of just repainting the bases to white and going with a larger tubular shade in a grey/linen. I think the open shelves are great they just need some streamlining and a great piece of art in the center above the desk to incorporate the pop of orange you're looking for. Eventually I would opt to splurge for a larger sofa. I think you're on the right track with the other suggestions for rugs and pillows. Good luck!

Erin, will definitely look at how to style bookshelves. I still haven't filled all the shelves yet as I'm in between deciding what books to keep and what books to throw out.

Kirshna........also check out carpet squares by FLOR and CB2 sells them as well. Pretty cool for making your own rug. It can be funky and different. Both places sell whole rugs as well.

I finally decided to purchase lower doors for my Billy bookcase from IKEA. I'm going to hack it with some stick-on panels and mirrors and maybe do this motif.
Thanks all for the great ideas!

Get rid of the red lamp. Get the silver or glass one. Add mirrors and a rug. Sometime less is more. Don't forgot that

Krishna, this is such a darling first place and you have done a wonderful job. The chair at the desk needs to be part of a pair next to your sofa. I like the bare floor. It keeps it fresh and unencumbered. The lamp from Mom and Dad is such a wonderful tribute back to you even though it's a temporary fix. Enjoy it for as long as it gives you good memories. If you want to get a new shade, then do it. Otherwise, just keep it the way it is for nostalgia. It's not going to make or break the room either way. Love the openness of your space and the white curtains. Your bookcase area is a total mess but you know that. If you are inclined to clean up your act over there and take some of the advice given, that is wonderful. If it will remain a mess because you don't have an "A" type personality for order, then by all means place doors on your units. Personally, if you can keep things tidy, well organized and organically reasonable, then open is much better. It's your first "sofa" of sorts and so I wouldn't do a thing with pillows or anything else until you are ready to spring for a new one which you can then "ornament" to your liking. Great start kiddo! :)

I love your colors. Try grouping the bookshelves together away from the window and get coloured baskets for the bottom half; grey, and orange perhaps. Move the desk in front of the window to cut down on glare.
Thank you for that reminder soniena. It's easy to get carried away sometimes.
Thank you Karen Paul. My boyfriend actually got the pair of chairs for me as a house-warming present. I still don't have a desk chair that I really like so I just the other one for now. I have just been decorating in stages until I really see something that I love. At first I thought arranging my books by color would make my bookshelf a little better but I realized that bookshelves only look good two ways- styled or filled all the way with books like a library. Since mine sits in-between, I think I'll just go with doors and only display a few of my favorites (the ones that I read over ad over). I have already decided on purchasing the doors for my unit and O'verlaying them.

Found these pillows at my local Target. Would any of these work with the couch?
I know they look more red than orange in the pictures but they're persimmon in color.
the black and whites would work i think, not sure about the others. Maybe some solid textured colors to go with the black and whites?
Yes, I liked how the black and whites looked too. I just ordered some fabric swatches since I don't want the print to clash with my patterned coffee table. Will be waiting for these in the mail so I can decide. My grandma said she will help me make the pillowcases for the throw pillows.
