From dark to light

We moved into this house with a plan. This kitchen was so dark and gloomy and did not suit our everyday family life. Our new renovated kitchen is exactly what we dreamed of: bright and open :)

Love your kitchen! I am seriously thinking of painting mine. How did you get the cabinets out in order to put in the new stove vent without damaging the sides of the existing cabinets? I'd love to do the same.

It is a great idea to set lights inside cabinets. And the ceiling lamps are beautiful. Stunning kitchen.

    @averyhadriana The countertops are quartz

@cani We removed the cupboards above the hood fan, patched up the screw holes on the sides that remained and then painted. Cupboards are installed by "twos" so it worked out well.

I love the difference the white paint makes. I have dark cabinets and want to paint them. Your beautiful kitchen is quite motivating!

It is beautiful. So all the existing cabinets had to be removed and taken to be painted? Was that difficult?
    Crystal N Karam thanked saratogaswizzlestick
  • 12 years ago
Only the doors were removed. The sides were painted on site. It wasn't difficult at all because the hinges were easy to snap on and off.

I have been meaning to add a photo of the tile. The other photo's don't give the unique shape justice :)
Love the backsplash! Beautiful kitchen. I'm designing mine now - both exciting and overwhelming.
Would you mind sharing the name of the tile? Thank you!

Is your kitchen in Florida by any chance? I have a kitchen in need of a makeover and your painter did a fantastic job. Do you consult with a kitchen designer?

@jennhes Here is the link to the tile we used. It is from Home Depot in the USA (we are from Canada, so we picked it up across the boarder).

@saratogaswizzlestick We live in Canada. My hubby and I did this all ourselves (except for the cabinets that were painted professionally). I have a degree in architecture, so I used myself as a consultant :P The painters are local.

I live in ottawa, I was wondering if you can tell me the name of the painter - and who did your upper cabnit (if you don't mind sharing, how much did it cost to cost build the uppers). I have a congac maple color kitchen and its still new but tired of the look...trying to go either grey blue or realy dark.

@ gannetremodel - there are a couple of companies who can do a really good pro job of repainting kitchen cabinets - I'll see if I've got them listed, and let you know. IIRC, price was around $95/door, but I can't remember who did them!

    Hi Crystal,
Would you happen to know if the backsplash was sold anywhere in the area of Ottawa? Also, what is your paint color (Grey walls). Thank you.

Love it! Question, did you use a painter who specializes in kitchens (like someone who sells cabinets as well)? or did you use a regular good contractor who can paint basically anything? I have a contractor now and I wonder if I should ask him to paint the doors on my kitchen. But I don't think he knows what he's doing in this domain.

What a great job, Crystal. Congratulations on your bright transformation. The second photo you posted is even better than the first. I'd love to have this kitchen.

This is one kitchen remodel I can get enthused about. Charming, warm, sweet, homey and light. Very nicely done. But did you replace the old dining set?
Very bright and airy, it looks like a beautiful area to hang around and sip coffee or tea while simply looking at the kitchen!
I love the white its so fresh but if you have kids you're in so much trouble every other day you'll see a little finger print but it worth the effort
  • 12 years ago
We have had white painted cabinets in the past and now have dark stained Maple (Medallion calls it "Brandywine"). The white were much easier to keep clean. We have knobs on these new ones and after less than 5 years, the finish has turned shiny around them. I wish I could convince my wife to paint them. Our house was built in 2009 and we plan on adding hardwood and new counters in a couple years. Maybe I can convince her by that time.
