Refacing brick fireplace

Our fireplace is an eyesore. We've removed the electric heaters and put down a new maple floor. Now I need to fix this fireplace. Attached are pictures of the existing fireplace, a nicely shaped fireplace I found on Houzz, and a nice finish on another fireplace that's too big for this space. So my ideal would be picture 2 faced like picture 3.

Can anyone tell me if it's difficult to reface a brick fireplace with stone? Will it be expensive?

We put a scratch coat over the brick to fill all the voids.

Not directly, but no, I'm quite sure it isn't a big deal to a masonry contractor. To them, this would be a small and simple job. Your idea for shape and finish sounds great! I'd just say, if you go with the very pale stone, make sure you paint your walls a darker color to provide some contrast. The fireplace should always be a focal point of location, shape, texture, and color.

Yes, the wall is going to be a darker color (probably blue-violet) because the floors are light maple. (On the other hand, this means that the fireplace wouldn't contrast much with the floors if I do it in light stone.) My kitchen ended up in beige tones, which I don't like, so I'm determined that the living room is going to be in clear colors with no brownish tones. I guess I could go with a darker stone if it's grey rather than tan.

I'm the old fashioned type, which means I kind of like the old fireplace! Just curious about what you ultimately decided to do!

We did reface it with a pale grey marble. Can't share a picture because we're not home now. Still haven't added a mantel yet--that turns out to be harder to source than the marble was.

Take the existing fireplace out and insert a new one pre-fab zero clearance fireplace, it can be gas direct vent if you have gas and you can run the gas line to it or it can be wood burning one. All the Flue pipe work if needed can be done on the outside and you can use stone to go directly over existing brick to save yourself demo work.

We just did a fireplace refacing job. The customer selected a 12x24 tile.
