Personally, I'm quite tired of both chevron (zigzag) and trellis patterns and feel they'll run their course shortly. They are a trend, will quickly fade and be replaced, so go for a classic rug. Wool sisal-look or oriental would be my choice. Remember the dining rug must be 4' wider and longer than the table for chair scoot and sit space. Then you must leave walk space between seated guests and the walls. I'm thinking you really don't have room. If you buy one for the living room, make sure it is 20" wider than the sofa. It is smart to use painter's tape and tape out some standard rug sizes on your floor to see what works. Always go to the next size larger rather than skimp on a rug that is too small. If you are on a tight budget, consider indoor/outdoor rugs - pretty stylish, easy to wash off and inexpensive. They'll work well while you shop for a lifetime classic one you'll hang on to through many homes and changes of furniture.

The dinning room looks better with that rug IMO.

The rug makes my eyes dizzy, so I vote to keep looking;)
