Before you get new pulls, see if you can clean these up. They might be great brass pulls. Strip the paint and try barkeepers friend. Gray will be fab. Here is an inspiration photo.

This is a great piece. I am not sure about a high gloss finish but love the idea of gray. I would also go over it after painting with an aging gel. It will deposit wherever there is a crevice just like natural wear does. As for the hardware, I am not a big fan of what is on it. I recently replaced the hardware on a piece. I just googled cabinet hardware and you would not believe the options. I ordered and had them in three days. Would love to see the finished product when you are done.

Haha I thought people would think I was crazy for that suggestion. Attached is an old buffet I found in a thrift store.

As Lori has recommended -- go with milk paint. I've painted with this type of paint before and the finish is smooth and professional. Here's another shade of gray (aqua undertones) that you might also like. You can put traditional pulls and hinges on it in keeping with the era in which it was made, or change it up and put modern pulls and knobs. The variety of pulls is endless! Check out Cool Knobs and Pulls.com, Myknobs.com or go to your local Lowes or Home Depot and browse. It's a beautiful buffet and well worth restoring!

Thank you all for your feedback. It's definitely motivating. I had a friend's son sand the old paint off but sadly he never finished the job. Those are brass pulls and I played with spray painting them white in hopes of keeping the solid oak natural.

This buffet is in my dining room and needs to work with the light fixture and another cabinet I refinished in white with silver pulls from Home Depot.

I'll give this milk paint a shot, look into aging gel and see what happens. I'll post the progress.

HI -- I would paint it a rich ox blood red in a lacquer finish and put on some Asian style hardware on . Try Leevalleytools.com for hardware .

I had an old buffet that I painted with Annie Sloan chalk paint I French Linen. I then waxed it with her clear wax and then did a light waxing with the dark wax to give it an antique feel. It turned out great! You can boil the pulls in a pot with a little bit of water and a whole lot of baking soda and it will take the paint off the metal. Post an after shot!
