We have found it difficult to make a TV hanging on a wall work without some kind of console underneath it to balance it. It also helps tremendously to create some kind of architecture around it with builtins to give it a real "home"

Not sure a large number of photographs around a tv is a good idea. It's very distracting.

Are you angling the TV in the corner? That wastes a huge amount of space.

You can search pictures on this site. I did TV and Living Room and about 50k pictures came up for me. Maybe start there and see if there are ideas you could incorporate into your place.

Also posting pics of your room here will help focus responses.

Is there a reason why you don't want to hang it above the fireplace? Based on the photo you posted, that is the perfect solution.

I love a gallery wall especially if there is a reflection of you in it! I love mixing some personal images and vintage art as in this photo to make the TV almost feel like art.

I find great vintage things on Etsy and eBay. This Haller cabinet from USM is a great option for under a TV, or the Latitude cabinet from CB2 is also good.

More pictures of living room. We have moved the furniture around so many times . We recently moved in to this new house. This is the only arrangement that really works. Need to decorate around it though. thanks.

Move the little shelves by the FP. Get a console for the TV to hide all the cords and accesssories.

While I usually don't like a TV over a FP, in this case, it might be best. Hang it as low as possible.

Maybe build a closure around the TV over the FP to hide it when not in use.

I did research on TV's above fireplace and some of the elements could get damaged from the heat. I didn't think that was true but I had a large framed photo above it and it actually warped it a little. I also am not crazy about that look too.

Move both shelves by the FP. They're making your room extremely cluttered. That's the problem with shelves--they call for lots of stuff.

Love your shutter in the corner but, please, remove that pouf on it. You tendency is to over-decorate. Less is more.

When you move the tall shelves scoot the chair over nearer the FP to close the open space.

Don't add any pictures around the TV. Again, too busy.

Take a look at what we can offer, we can wrap the whole wall or just accent behind the tv. Either way, it turns out awesome

If you oriented your furniture differently you could put the TV to the right of the FP? On a console similar to what leelee has suggested.

I agree that above the FP should be a last resort.

I didn't realize how cluttered the room looks until I saw these pictures! I like the idea of a console the width of the wall but if I put the tv on it it will be positioned to the left of the TV viewing seating. Do you think I should just get a swivel to turn the TV when we want to watch it? We also can't put the TV above fireplace as it is wider than the fireplace wall.

First of all, that little TV stand makes the TV itself look even bigger than it is. My suggestion would be to build in or purchase a console for the entire wall to the left of the fireplace. Wall mount the TV so that it can be angled out from the wall to the degree you want it to be. That will "ground" the TV and give you additional storage and display space.

Another idea, although one which I don't think would look as good as the first, would be to build in an angled console for the TV. The reason I don't think it will look as good is because it will bulkier. It would blend better if you continued a built-in across to the FP.

In either scenario, I would add built-ins to each side of the FP in order to balance it out. If you can't do this right now, rearrange the pieces you have. On the right side you have 3 tall pieces - the screen, the shelving unit and the lamp - and on the left everything is low. It makes the eye bounce all over. Try moving the screen over to the TV side and moving the low shelving unit somewhere else (not on the FP wall at all) - it is too low and squatty for this high wall. Center the tall shelf unit on the r.h. wall.

Then a console to the right of the fireplace, might be better than to the left side. Swivel or no swivel, you still need something heavier and wider than the TV underneath it and a console is a great way to balance and achieve a more streamlined/ less cluttered look. An articulating swivel might be a good idea, don't mount it too high, keep it low just above the console so it appears to be sitting on it.

Any piece holding a TV needs to be 25% longer than the set, so keep that in mind as you shop for a credenza. Put the TV on a swivel to adjust for viewing I'd paint the ladder shelf to match the screen and continue using that color as your accent, leaning toward a beachy feel. Place them either side of the FP and remove the mirror from the mantel, as it is doubling the ceiling - not a feature you want to see more of. Turn the window vertically and hang 5" above the mantel. Use the 2 pairs of candlesticks and 2 framed photos on the shelf right or left on the mantel - light ones in summer and dark ones in winter - candlesticks on one side and the framed photo on the other side, just slightly layered in front of the window. Center your rug and sofa on the FP and put the two chairs side by side at the window end. You might switch out the rug for a larger wool sisal-look one in summer and to anchor the beach feeling. Maybe the one you have now will work in the dining room.

Thanks for the recommendations. Unfortunately my mantle is a pathetic 1 1/2 inch deep one that I want my husband to redo so I can't really put anything on top of it. Such a bummer. If I hang the mirror vertically 5 inches above the mantle is it okay that I have all that empty space above the mantle. I have never had a house with such high ceilings.

Hi Connie -- feeding off many of the comments above -- I take a long time to come back sometimes because these little drawings can take a while (even though this one is really rough, sorry!). And then there's life, of course. You could consider wall mounting the TV, or putting it on a console, but in either case yes, I think you need a swivel fitting of some sort. Otherwise, as you see...

I suspect you couldn't put the TV above the fireplace because it's too big. So I'm suggesting you go vertical for the art there because the TV is such a dominant horizontal shape, as would be a right-sized console. Then you could put a collage on the wall to the left. As Leelee has said, you have a tendency to over-decorate. I agree you could simplify.

To that effect, I like your little unit with the baskets, and that you are using boxes to the right of the fireplace. I love baskets and boxes and chests. A great way to replace bits and pieces with solid shapes. But the basket shelves should find another home, I think.

I love the blue-ish screen in the corner, but agree that you should take the pink rosette thingy off. Leave lovely alone.

But I also love that the room has a homey, real feeling. Don't lose that. Good luck.

We have supplied some great looking barn door hardware that can carry a art piece , tapestry or door panel to cover the TV. It's a great look.

Hi everyone. Here is an update on the TV in the corner of the living room. I originally posted my dilemma in decorating around my new 60 inch flat screen a year ago. Thanks to all who provided valuable suggestions. I finally found a console larger than the TV as recommended and hubby hung the TV. We could not hang it above the fireplace as some of you suggested as the TV is wider than the wall that the fire place is on. Anyhow, I am trying to figure out how to decorate the wall next to the slider. I just have a little round table that holds dog treats that I use when I bring dogs in from the backyard. I know this needs to go but need something on that wall that would allow us to store a flashlight when we take them out and treats. I have a gallery wall on another wall in the room so cannot do one there either. I know sometimes less is more but I feel that that area in the room looks bare and naked. Also that little chest next to the TV is housing my weights that I use when I work out. The modem and cords are to the left of the TV which I would like to somehow camouflage. Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.

I would do a very simple, wall-hung console shelf (with a drawer, if you can find something) You could store some stools underneath, something like this. You need some color and softness there, and something that isn't going to compete for space - either in reality or visually - with the TV console. This style is wrong, but it gives you the idea for a small shelf and a mirror above - you could use art for more color.


The main idea is to keep it off the floor. If you don't like this idea, you could also use a different end table, with storage, next to your chair. Then add a very large piece of art on the wall next to the doorwall.
