Need help updating this fireplace hearth.

This monstrosity 13 feet long 20 inches wide... Not spending $4000 to recover with stone. Any other suggestions?

Already going to remove paneling, painting, redoing the ceiling, lights, doors... Accented neutral color scheme to come.
Grays, cream, accented with the red mantel

if you don't like the texture of the ledge do a troweled cement plaster you can even cover the rock face if you don't like it. Don't use anything combustible over the rock face it's too close to the firebox. I would paint the whole wall and the red mantle a matching shade to the face if you are keeping the top as is. Let the ceiling treatment be the red accent. I don't mind the ledge being slightly darker, it grounds the fireplace.

To disguise the existing rock you could use a large slab of sheetrock

Get a contractor to cut it down to hearth size and consider a heat resistant stain.

After the sheet rock, then is it painted?
Cutting the hearth, sounds expensive, then what?

Skim coat stone with thin set mortar for a cheap fix. I'd look at the dry stack stone ledge stone for dyi install over mortar when you find the funds.

You might want to look into Faux Stone Panes, Faux Brick, I just received information from http://www.anticoelements.com/ appears to be a DYI friendly product or your house mechanic should be able to install it for you.

HI -- VerNida- Please wait until everything else is done and then see what the stone looks like . The stone is nice and has nice colors and I think you may not mind the way it looks once the surroundings have changed . Just a thought .

Use cement plaster over the stones and have it troweled smooth, then you can paint it. I'd plaster over the rock on the fireplace so you would then have a clean, smooth look.

I like it, but maybe refacing with stacked stone would update it.
