Does this just look stupid?

I originally had the chair by the back door, but the door was hitting the chair every time my husband went outside no matter HOW MANY TIMES i begged him not to swing the door so wide......but he is a sasquatch with the wingspan of a pterodactyl, so the chair had to go- making the area behind the couch barren. I put a (cheap and ugly) desk on the stair case wall, but IT HAS NO SOUL. It is an old, crappy, cheap, target desk and i really hate it. Which brings me to my last attempt at decorating this area.....a small reading area instead. I tried to introduce some texture to the room with the goat hide and tree trunk......but really I am clueless as to whether or not this looks good. I would so much appreciate any input!

ps. please excuse the mess, playing with logs is messy.

mpoulsom, That monkey is still available so you can have him! Go to my shop to make sure he is the one you want as i think i have a few gray ones. Just go to the ETSY site and type in Cocke County Creations. And def roll the print to mail, I will frame him with a nice substantial frame and mat.

I think if ever there was a spot the needed to be cleared and simplified this is it. Put a medium potted tree in there and enjoy the openness . Leave room for Sasquatch to go through with out damaging anything.
The arrangement in the last photo looks less cluttered and should make it easier to move about the room. By the way, the comments are hilarious.

This post is cracking me up. I love all of your animal art, especially the squirrel picture from your original post. I like your chair, lamp, log arrangement in the second picture. I think the chair and log by the door that you ultimately decided on looks good too. It fits in well with your house-which is really cute.
Thanks alleykat! I'm glad you like squirrel! I actually painted that one :)
I just copied it from a sign I saw once. Not very original I know, but better than stealing the sign. I'm too old for stealing signs, not quick like I used to be.

    Speaking of animal art....

Oh, dear. Now I have to wonder what their names are.
......idk about this......will it evoke comments such as "love the door" or "WTF was she thinking? Grab the primer!"

I somehow got a huge gray glob of paint in my hair and now that I'm looking at the picture I see I completely missed a gray triangle and my husband is all like "omg what are you doing now?"
Marylin, the cows are adorable! Is that a piece you own? If so, names are in order!
    Love the door.
I think paint is a good hair conditioner.
(Also a few globs, here and there, tend to make the neighbors scurry along a bit faster.)

Laura, your concept is good, it's just that the pieces are not right. Don't try and save a cheap chair from target, first it certainly isn't inviting because it's not comfortable for reading. This space really is not going to be functional as a reading area. You need a heavier piece here, like maybe a 3 drawer chest, with a lamp on it, a couple of framed photos, some greenery and a runner in front of the chest.. It will be cozy, you can use the chest to put keys in, gloves, out going mail, etc. Your husband can have a designated drawer as yourself . DO NOT decorate the door! This space is a minor fuctional space, to be more decorative and pretty, than anything else. Ann Marie Yorke, Interior Designer, NJ

yorkowitz, ....oops.....too late. Well, I must see it through now, besides, a little primer and paint will restore it if it looks terrible. I love the idea of a big low dresser in this space and will likely do that in the future. getting my husband to buy furniture is like asking him to gouge out his own eyeballs. I had a dresser in a pic upthread that i considered putting there, but no one seemed to like it and it's prob too tall with the mirror on it.....

Paint your funky lil desk top to match your door and do your voodoo magic design skills on the legs with the same colors.

laura, the door is looking fab! keep going mama! :)

I like the painted door. Nice job.

I would love to see a long backless cane bench in that space. In the attached picture see the cane under the floral seat cushion something like that. maybe with wicker baskets underneath for extra storage. I would like the bench to have a dark stain.

If you did a bench across the bottom of the stairs, and did hooks on the top it is great for storage too
  • 12 years ago
A bench is not a bad idea for sure. Might work under the goat. But on the staircase wall I think it would need something above it but couldn't really put any art above it because the staircase wall is just too low (to the left of the staircase door I am painting). If the door looks good painted, I'm guessing I won't need anything in the space. I don't want to do hooks. I did that in the kitchen and this is what it always looks like, I don't want that hot mess in the living room too lol.

If you like the idea of a bench beneath "Bob", do you have two logs the same height you could top with wood planks to make your own bench?
Add a wooly blanket or faux skin?
I was just thinking about the door slamming issue and wonder if anything too wide would argue with your stairway access.
(BTW, Have the same look with our coat hooks in the laundry / mudroom.)

good idea moggie...............i have stump end tables with glass tops! Cheap and cheerful! And my house decor is not even rustic really...........rustic modern i guess in some respects! :)
Man, the more i think about it, the more i am loving the idea of a bench under the goat!

Bring your chair back if you loved it. They sell door stoppers that you apply to the hinges that will stop it mid swing at a point you determine and that will save your chair and your poor Pteradactyl from feeling bad about his sasquashiness. But even better would be a thin profile console table decorated with some small frames and on the stair wall and a nice sculpture and small lamp. If the house has a fireplace you can invest in some really purrrty birch logs that you could stack under the table. They are traditionally brown with a white-ish bark that would be eyecatching. Also put a small area rug or long runner as well to break up all the floor space

I saw your second set of photos. Have you thought of a long tufted bench for the base of the stairs. Also if you are not tied to those white panels you could paint them different colors and maybe replace the animal paintings with a long antique mirror something with that mercury glass effect. Then pick a few shades of white, cream and a very light gray and alternate the panel colors. That might be nice. I like the stump but not there. If you had a small 1/2 bath or washroom it may serve as a nice area to put magazines, or a basket of handtowels.

Also on the back of the door that bangs into furniture. You could find and old wood canoe oar and hang it there. My mom has an oar given to her by some Inuit tribesmen in Alaska when she filmed them years ago and to this day it is one of the prettiest things I have ever seen. It is well oiled and they put braided strips of leather with all these beautiful beads around part of the handle. In every house she has lived in it has had a place of pride and since it's only about 5 feet it makes a statement.

laurabona, oh good. Christine is right about the door stoppers, they really do work.
(You clearly have more energy than I do!)
Just to be clear (very, unlike me) the door by Bob is a back door and not an entry door, right? Are your powerful peeps coming in from an outside porch or deck?
Christine, I will def get those door stoppers (and rubber grippers for couch feet). Your ideas sound beautiful...but I don't think I want to swap out my art for a mirror :(

moggie, yes the door by bob is a back door (which i cant wait to replace) that goes to my back porch. I actually had another thread asking for advice on a new back door.
laurabona, you gave me such a laugh with your wording! So, so funny!
vanesca, stick around for more laughs when you see the door......it's looking like a circus in here. I don't even wanna show you guys. I'm already thinking "do i have primer or do i need to go get some....?"
I don't have any suggestions but I do think you are hilarious , I laughed so hard I started crying
  • 12 years ago
laurabona, You quack me up. I didn't mean using four logs as legs - just two, with a slimmer top. Anyway, I'll bet your brain in on overdrive (when is it not?)
    So, how's it coming?
Will your peeps use Bob's new bench to take their shoes off? ... or do they leave the muddy footwear on the porch?
Hey laurabona how's the decorating coming along? I'm ready to laugh so update us on the latest decor ideas. Lol! I'm chuckling while sending this message. Lol

Keep it white. Add some type of live plant ... to add some warmth and life.
The last one. Clean and open.
I love the table with lamp. Fits better to me...
I prefer the blue shade lamp. Would be nice if it were smaller lamp like the one on the left

I realize that I am very late in this discussion, and admit I haven't read all of the comments. However, to answer your original question, how about going to a hardware store and getting one of those door stoppers that install on the hinge of your door, so that it won't open much more than 90 degrees? Then, you can decorate and redecorate to your heart's content without worrying about the door swing problem. Cost less than $10.

i might be late- i luv your wainscoting and library look- would you consider expanding on that and change the woodwork of the staircase and door + the update the handle- it would flow better ad maybe you would not feel you have to hide your door( your doors staircase wood is more comtemporary maybe)-
  • 11 years ago
sorry for type errors -then update handle- and maybe-- sorry!!
The last 2 options I like best.
