Interior Black doors --oil vs latex?

I've hired a painter to paint all my interior doors black. First they used an oil paint b/c it would self level better and the doors were originally painted in an oil so it seemed right. I should note these doors are old and had many layers of paint. Some were stripped some were just sanded down. They are not perfect but smooth enough. However, after just one coat of the oil (on two of the doors) the smell is so overwhelming I'm thinking to switching to a latex now. We have an oil based primer and Im under the impression from the contractor that is ok to switch. My question is should I go with semi gloss or regular gloss to achieve the beautiful oil paint luster? The oil came out beautifully but I'm not sure I can handle all the fumes on 6 more doors w/o proper ventilation (its 30 degrees this week so it makes it tough especially at night)... any suggestions? I just want to replicate the oil sheen and not sure if that's a semi or high gloss (I worry high gloss will be like a lacquer and too shiny slick) Thanks everyone!!
