I think art would look better but I think the mirror looks fine

I like the mirror itself but it looks a bit awkward and is reflecting the top of your window and top of curtains instead of something pretty or interesting.

I like the mirror but not there - if you are stuck on having a mirror maybe something with a more contemporary look with mirrored or silver frame. Otherwise go shopping and get yourself a nice piece of art OR re-purpose something that you already have. Remember you can try it and always return your new purchase!!

I thought I liked it there and just could not believe your luck in finding just the right size...BUT then I saw the pic Mark posted of your room with art and just the right colors, and I have to say that art will be soooo much nicer there.

Even though it is a good fit, this mirror does not compliment the rest of your interior. I would look for something else, something not as "heavy", something lighter and more contemporary for this beautiful interior you have created. Remember it does not have to fill up the entire space. Here are a few suggestions for inspiration. Best of luck!

Don't settle just because it fits. I think a picture looks better. Maybe try it in a different place.

I love it! I think what is missing is a lack of decor around the mirror. try a few candle holders of differing heights to create a little more depth.

The right artwork would defiantly pull the room together and give it a more finished look. However, I would get rid of the trim and hang the artwork at between 6" to 8" above the mantle and place some candle holders on one side.

@Mark - I like the art idea. I prefer canvas since it will not be affixed to the wall. @ APK designs - Lovely mirror suggestions, however they look very heavy and considering it will not be affixed to the wall I don't want anything to heavy and the dimensions need to be 36x36 to cover the opening. I appreciate everyone's input. I will return the mirror and search for some artwork or maybe I will create it myself.

Pitch the mirror, go to the Principle Gallery and buy the first piece of art you see that makes your heart flutter, and pitch the mirror. And the fuzzy pillow, pitch that too.

I don't know what the inside of the niche is like. Could you use mirror tiles and an art sculpture to pick up the colors in the room? If not, I like the painting idea.

So, I already commented and I kind of like the mirror but, if you keep it, please remove the candles flanking it and leave the hearth bare.

I very much like the mirror; it is fun, unexpected as mentioned and keeps the room relaxed. I'd keep it. Mirrors can always be re-used in another room/home/etc f you move/change colors or one day fall in love with another piece of art.

if you would change the wall colour behind it it would be perfect .


Looking at the yellow chair I would use that colour for the wall behind the mirror ,its warm and fresh at the same time and the mirror 's frame will blend in perfectly

Sorry, haven't read other posts--I'm not usually a mirror over FP fan but I really like that mirror. The only suggestion is to hang the mirror just a few inches above the mantel then use two corks or other small props on the back near the top so the mirror angles down and gives a view of the room instead of the ceiling.

Ok, now I see you can't really hang the mirror but you can still attach it to the wall and use spacers to angle it down ever so slightly.

I like the mirror, but not over the fireplace. I see it in an entryway or foyer over a console type table.

It's a rather odd shape for that spot

@3wizkids - I purchased the rug from rugsusa.com. The mirror reflects a portion of a window and curtain rod. My initial idea was art work which seems to be the consensus here.

@armygirl1987 - I was thinking the same thing that it was unexpected but I will keep looking for artwork.

If you've decided to go with art which is almost always the better choice then something like one of these would look fabulous in your home. Still like your mirror.

You can try to put art that is printed on mirror I found being sold www.gilt.com. See some ideas from the artist Parvej.

Definitely keep a mirror. This mirror is a bit to chunky for the room. The layout of the room is great. It has a real feng shui feel. Great light open airy feel. Keep the mirror somewhat simple because the focus of the room should be the fireplace, and you have the built-in with decorative items so you don't want it to busy.

I like the mirror. To me you need some symmetry on each side of the fireplace. Possibly add a matching bookcase on the left or add something large and tall to balance the bookcase. Once you work out these issues it might change the effect of the entire area.

A mirror represents water in the Feng Shui tradition. So it must be a good balance to the fireplace :-)

I would put a resting bouddha near the mirror, like the one in this picture. (But I like these kind of statues a lot ;-)

You know when you consider the existing texture on the wall behind the mirror, why not just paint the textured portion in a different colour that compliments the room an antique gold, then maybe add a piece of art at the top between the mouldings. Just for something really unique!

I don't love the mirror doesn't seem to be the right balance with fireplace. I would search for artwork. I would love to see that wall have some color and pattern. I love the area rug and would love to see artwork for fireplace to have great color too! Return the mirror.

Try to put some yellow pictures or mirror with yellow frame, that will do the work
