Hickory cabinets, paint or stain

I would like to have espresso or a rustic black with the crown a different color. What is best paint or stain and how hard is it. I'm not the craftiest person would like to yie into my bar stools and breakfast table

Oh my . . this is not a diy job.
Please Reconsider. Your things have enough green that the golds resonate together and that is enough. Your cabinets are high end as is, but your chairs and things, please forgive me for pointing out that they are . . not so much. Espresso won't be as high end and will clash with countertop.
Consider looking at consignment shops for a sweet set of dishes just for display . . . red would be darling this time of year and I see your red appliance base.

You would have sand down everything to the fresh wood and then stain. It is not a trivial job. The sanding is ALOT of work in terms of time and skill. Because of how labor intensive it is, I wouldn't be surprised if new doors are actually cheaper.

Those are great looking cabinets, I would concentrate on a design that leaves the cabinets as is.

You can easily do this by yourself with Annie Sloan chalk paint ,no sanding ...google it

Thanks for the input, yes they were custom built for my house by a very good cabinet maker when I built my house 12 yrs ago. I am just ready for a change.

I really like the cabinets -the style is very simple and not dated, and it sounds like they are well built. If you are looking for a change there might be others ways to achieve this and leave cabinets as they are - try new hardware or change a few upper cabinets to have glass inserts - perhaps cabinet maker could do that easily. A new paint color for the walls or different bar stools would really change the spce

Ok I have decided to leave the cabinets and paint the china cabinets and change out the legs on my butcher block and paint to match. May paint the crown as well still debating that one.
