I should say that I am in desperate need of suggestions for everything in my room. I want to add blues. I am looking for a nice area rug, lamps, pillows. Everything. Threw everything old out.

I love those ideas but I don't have the financial means to do so. We discussed putting the tv over the fireplace. But the room is so small that if we keep the couch where it is we would strain our neck to look up. If we put the couch across from the fireplace we would have to put chairs in front of the bookcases. Such a small space.

chairs flanking fire / angled in front of bookcases is a better choice than tv in front. I like the idea of sofa facing fire and tv over. You can also use a swing arm mount and place tv to left but pull it out at an angle to watch and put a nice blue and sand piece of art over the fireplace. put a sofa table behind the sofa so that when you walk in you are presented with a place for lamps, sculpture, storage.

Filling in the innermost layer of brick with glass tile or polished travertine would add some color and make it a bit more modern.

I think the whitewash is workable and highlighting that wall is all it needs (as in your inspiration pic.) With this said, would it be possible to move the t.v. to the diagonal opposite corner and move the sofa against the windows; as in the 3rd inspiration photo? Or, move the t.v. to another room altogether. We rented a small house a while back and made the guestroom to a t.v./library room using an inexpensive sofa bed. Move out also the end table that's against the bookshelves. Use something lighter and more petite if a table must be there (metal/mirrored). Something more substantial on the wall would draw attention up. I see what looks like several family photos. Choose 3 favorites and have them put onto canvas (very inexpensive online) the dress up the bookcases. Shop Craig'slist ... all sorts of good deals there.

Can you put the couch in front of the window, and mount the flat screen on the wall the couch is currently on?
I think some warm oranges and greens would be beautiful.
Your fireplace looks great, I'd suggest a starburst type mirror to reflect some light over the fireplace and then books/photos etc.

I think it looks good the way it is now, you just need to figure out the tv - blocking your bookshelf doesn't work. Can you take a photo of the whole room?

On the two side book shelve to the ceiling with a center built in mirror lots of details on all .

I think the fireplace looks really good now but you could paint the brick the same as the walls and that would look good too. What color is your plaid chair?

I sense frustration with this room. I have some suggestions that I think will make you fall in love with it. You have a very attractive space that just needs some details. You mentioned wanting to pull blue in so I have found some ideas.

1. An area carpet is the perfect place to start with your color
2. Drapery panels hung along the ceiling line
3. Add pillows to the sofa that coordinate with the drapes
4. The window mirrors can be purchased or created yourself. I would add one on either side of the fireplace above the bookcases.
5. Artwork, sculpture or large family canvas print above the fireplace
6. A coffee table fully accessorized
7. Add texture and color to the shelves by the fireplace. Pottery items in blue and neutrals along with family photos in matching frames

This can all be done a bit at a time and on any budget.

You can also pay the inside of the bookshelf the color of the walls. Or an Accent color would be nice to
