What type of paint are you painting them with?

After you touch up the paint, I suggest adding an rubbed glaze. This will help out with future scrapes and everyone will think you have brand new cabinets.
I would also consider changing your hardware. The current knobs allow everyones knuckles to hit your cabinets when opening and closing them. Pick up a few samples at your local hardware store-try out oil-bronzed handles. You might like what you see.

I used a good water-based paint. I primed them first with water-based primer.

Chases 27, two questions, (1) what is a rubbed glaze and where can I get it?, and (2) why would oil-bronzed handles keep knuckles from hitting the cabinets?

We have had much better results with oil based primers over previously finished cabinets.

This is exactly why we are needing to to repaint out kitchen cabinets.

Always use an OIL BASED PAINT when painting cabinets. Its a much harder product and cleans up much easier. Always use a good primer base.

When you prep a cabinet door special care needs to be given to the areas around the knobs. Over time the natural hand oils and dirt accumulate which will not let any paint adhere as well. If we use oil we prefer Fine Paints of Europe however if we use water base we use SW emerald. We always prime with an oil primer.

Chases27, Thanks for the clarification -- you are suggesting I replace the knobs with handles, right? Sounds like a good idea. I wouldn't like the dark brown handles against a black cabinet, though, brushed silver or pewter looks better to me.

Dear MS Colours, Ralph Wright, and Rockin Fine, Thank you so much for your suggestions. Unfortunately, sanding down to bare wood AGAIN ain't gonna happen. I'm too old. Since the only problem is around the handles, how about if I sand just that area down to bare wood, prime just that area with oil based primer and paint just that area with an oil based paint. What about the rubbed glaze suggested by Chase27?
