This is a great space with lots of potential. First thing if to get the curve of and add a door with the wooden plaid detail or a simple thing to do is to leave it.

It sounds like you have somewhat of a "traditional home" floor plan and you have modern furtinure. If it is high tech modern your challenges will come with use of color, woods and flooring. If you have contemporary looks it is a little easier to blend. Definitely your color palate will set the feeling, if the floors are wood, area rugs with patterns, designs and bold color will help bridge the distinct two different looks. You might square the entries for harmony throughout the house. I love how the light falls through from the family room into the hallway - what about some enormously dramatic drapes, that will let you have light when you want, cosy when you don't. Don't be scared of red!

You are overthinking the problem. Paint the walls to set off your furniture, lay down some good rugs and move in. Because you can probably see the rooms from each other you need to have some continuity with accent colors and wall colors.

Yes, the house has a strongly Craftsman feel to it. Your furniture doesn't. So what? It's open and well-lit, the rooms are nicely defined. The woodwork is bold and clean-lined, much like modern furniture.

Since your rooms open off the entrance hall, the hall needs to be the unifying space. Try to pick a colour from your furniture and furnishings that can work in all the spaces. This can be the wall colour for your entrance, giving some pizzaz to the hall. This colour can then be highlighted in each room through cushions, upholstery or curtains as well as some bric-a-brac. Rugs are a great way of introducing colour and contemporary style.

I see you have a beautiful tile inset in the entrance which I'm assuming you don't want to cover up with an area rug. It's difficult to give good advise because we can't see the other side of the wall space in the entrance. However in the entrance if you have wall space across from the dining room and possibly you've already done this, you could put a hall table or a chest with some interesting paint color or design and then dress that with a lamp or do wall sconces on either side and a good of piece of artwork where people will see it. Or place a statue on the chest with a mirror above on the wall. As for the wall around the front door, if there is a place to stop, you could use a complimentary paint color on that wall only. You could add a painted wood paneled pediment across all your arched sheetrock openings. I would also panel the sheet rock half walls that the columns sit on with painted wainscoting. Your home is well designed from what I can see, but I don't think the arched sheetrock is as good a look as a straight across pediment.

Am I right in thinking these are not photos of your actual home but that of a model home, and you are hoping to make some changes to the trim work and door style to reflect a more craftsman vibe than the home shown?

I would choose to square off the doorway into the first room..no pillars..just great trimwork. that will also allow you to have corners with small walls in that room to make it more "user friendly" so to speak. Finish all the doorways like the one in the second picture. Looks like it will be a great house.

Tell your builder what you are trying to achieve. The easiest solutions and most aesthetically pleasing for your new home could come from your own builder's suggestions. Also, your builder (or your builder's designers) can see the bigger picture.

I think the curves are sensational! Curves can be very contemporary if the furnishings also have some "curve appeal". Remove the posts and half wall, leave as large an opening as possible, and use the same trim as the front door. Repeat the look as close as you can to the other opening.

Use a bold paint to add interest to your beautiful entry. It will make a statement of "Hello!" I used Sherwin Williams verditer blue and love it everyday. My entry faces south and the sun streaming in on this color is inspiring!

Use accessories that offer a blend of shapes that will allow you to discover your home and personal tastes. I would stand back and think about where you can create harmonious contrasts. I agree rugs "invite" you into a room. I think the wood shelf on the fireplace could be reinvented. Most homeowners dream about the spacious look your home has, appreciate the beauty you have and add some color splashes, you don't need to make any major changes.
