I think a mirror would just magnify the long feel of that hall. Try some local artists to see if you can have apiece painted that would look awesome there and leave it. If the space gets all the traffic you don't need a piece of furniture there.I would want something really eye catching to take your eye to the end of that space, i think i see a couple of picture hung on the wall by the stairs if so they are hung way too high. The center of a picture in a hallway should be at eye level.

How about a wall water fountain;)

Go to the local fine art gallery, one that sells real art, and buy the most beautiful piece you find. Hang it so it is centered as you look down hallway from the front door. I would post an image but I do not want to influence your selection.

If I center a piece (art or furniture) on the 4 foot hallway, as soon as you got to the end, there would be about 4 feet of blank wall space to the left. Would this look strange?

I think it will give the impression that there's more going on back there than meets the eye.

KShoa - can you please clarify if you would center artwork on the hallway (with 4 ft open wall space to the left and almost against doorway on right) or center on the large wall, therefore, drawing your eye around the corner to the left?

The illumination of the recessed light is centered on the hallway. Place a primary piece of art as I described above and a secondary piece of art in the remaining wall space, if you feel it is needed.

To name a few.

You have many options, depending on how symmetric you'd like things to be.

1) One large panel centered on the back wall (large being at least 12" from each side of the wall - in your case about 6 feet I think). This way people will see a portion of it as they walk in, and they'll know there's more back there. This is not symmetric but intriguing.

2) A set of artwork (like the white pair I posted for you - I have many more). This way each one of them can be more centered as you come up/down stairs and as you enter the house. If you do hang two pieces, I'd make sure it's a set, and not two random artworks.

3) One artwork centered across the hallway, and another item like a tall bookshelf next to it. That way you'll divide the wall into two with different interest points.

I like KShoa #3 idea. You could also get a huge piece ~8ft to go across the hall and be centered on that wall.

The bench takes up too much space and the recessed light only illuminates half the wall.

If you look on etsy.com under "very large art" there are lots of very large paintings. Here are a few from that site. The first is LibbyFineArt 44" x 58" on etsy. A mirror would be cold and (if you care) bad feng shui.

vjs12 - the paint is Benjamin Moore Monroe Bisque (HC-26). This color really changes with the light. The tile is Daltile Continental Slate in Brazilian Green.

I agree with Oasis' idea of hanging a large tapestry. Textile art could add yin textural elements to balance all the yang elements (smooth surfaces, light molding, etc.) in this space.

Another possibility is to cut into that end wall to create a shallow niche. Such a niche could have its own internal recessed lighting. It could have shelves or be a place to hang inset art. A niche could be "centered" into the space. The interior of the niche could be the same surface treatment (painted drywall) as the hallway walks or could be accented with some other finish.

Don't forget about the lighting. Some of the suggestions will not work well with the existing lighting.
