Yes...the floors

I agree. There are many postings in which someone is asking the contractor or designer about the flooring, and this company replies with a plug of their own product. It's one thing to try to be helpful, but this seems rather self-serving.

This is what pro's call "Sand and Stain"
floors. Not pre-finished. Even though it's called sand and stain. In the case of Walnut you actually don't stain because the color of Walnut is perfect as is.
They lay down unfinished Walnut boards then sand and Poly.
The best thing about that this if you get a scratch the entire board is the the color of Walnut not just the top so it's much harder to see compared to oak floors stained this color and the grain is better looking.
It's also worth noting, these are what's called common compared to number 1's
In general commons are about $1 to $1.50 cheaper than a number one.
I.e. 5 in. Wide unfinished 1's about $7.00 a sqft compared $5.50 for common.
The difference is the common is more multicolored and some knots maybe a few shorter boards. I actually like the look of commons better. In live edge Walnut you usually see more multi color.
Those are prices in Missouri where Walnut is common but try to find who in the area sells mostly unfinished wood floors not your standard flooring and tile multi store.

Josh, thank you for that explanation. We are considering walnut floors for our new home. In this photo the floor, on my screen, appears to have a little red tint. Is that the case with some walnut?

coh143, Black Walnut has several grades as mentioned. Select, #1 Common, #2 Common. Here is a recent finished on site project <- link where we mixed the #1 and #2 together. Yes Black Walnut will have a slight red tint in some of the planks. While I really like Black Walnut with no stain if you want to blend it together a little more the Provincial stain color is very popular over Black Walnut. It does not cover up the natural beauty.

Josh, thank you. I really appreciate your thoughts on the walnut as you seems to have great knowledge! If we choose walnut and would like the varied colors but not a red tint, what grade and/or finish would you recommend? Thank you!

Josh, your previous post to coh143 has lots of misinformation. NWFA/NOFMA grades dont have a "Common" that is different than a "#1" the correct grade is #1 Common, #2 Common etc. I tried to clarify that for coh143. "Live Edge" wood anything refers to slab wood used in making table tops its not used in floors. It sounds like you dont know what you are talking about but you offer lots of advice. The project I showed coh143 gives her visual examples of #1 and #2 common and also a stain solution to too much red in the wood. Houzz is public forum where industry pros and home owners share projects and ideas freely with each other. Its a benefit to everyone that understands how this site has grown and helped millions of people around the world.

Oak and Wanker Less preferable boards are sold as #2’s as opposed to #1’s my mistake ( less preferably meaning shorter boards more color variations and perhaps a few knots), In other woods such Oak ext. common is the name given for less desirable wood. Wow sweet burn got me on a technicality. I would hope you could do that I mean you are a flooring company. Unfortunately you didn’t read the message well because I never mentioned live edge being for flooring. You should have read it more throughly. I was referring to the colors in live edge Walnut as it is lighter around the edges a lot of the time. Live Edge is popular currently and I would assume most people commenting on Houzz have seen it so it was a perfect reference point in discussing the color. Please stop slinging your

Coh I have Black Walnut in my house.
I bought 3 inch unfinished. I had them sanded and poly without stain. If you buy unfinished flooring your installer can do some samples perhaps 1 natural and 2 with stain mixes. That’s the best part of unfinished flooring well one of them
The other is it is all sanded together to be one piece of wood the hole floor has wood filler for any gaps or high and low spots. Hands down better result. The Only advantage to prefinished floors in that they can apply the poly at the perfect heat and humidity which makes it a bit more durable. Just have your pro use Bona Traffic or Traffic HD and the difference is minuscule. My unstained floors don’t have any red. Use Black Walnut. There are differences in some other species of walnut. Go to your local specialty flooring store that the pros use that mostly carry unfinished. Support local no shipping cost. Solid wood not engineered that some people that keep chiming when not spoken to are selling. Solid wood will be there in 100 years and as a side note will strengthen your house.
