Where is your sink? You should always have an additional light over the sink :)

you do have general lighting, but you will be working in your own shadow on the countertops and stove.
without pot lights (recessed ceiling fixtures) or under cabinet lighting, you are left with mounting smaller ceiling light fixtures above each counter area where you'll be working.
i suppose you could always consider some nice wall sconces and ditch the wall cabinets?!
additionally, "enough light" is a relative term, and a kitchen with dark, matte colored cabinets and countertops and walls will always need brighter lighting than one with shiny, white cabinets, counters & walls.
what colors will your kitchen be? why don't you want to use pot lights or under cabinets?

There is no general rule, but in most cases in front of upper cabinets, equally spaced and along the perimeter of counter top working area.

Other then that, it is all depends how much light you need or prefer to have. I've kitchens and some of them you can get a sun tan because of the amount of light they wanted. Some people use comfortable soft lighting enough to lit up work area and they add under cabinet mounted lightning. As Vanessa mentioned definitely over the sink, island,etc.

Best way to go about it is talk to your electrician, and he will make a suggestion to you and which lighting to use to suit your needs.

Thanks all, what I was looking for was the "equally spaced and along perimeter in front of upper cabinets". I will have to recheck at kitchen window to see if electrician put in the receptacle, thought that would have been a given. I was more concerned for prep area by stove. There are two lights in the hood over stove but was concerned that it would not be enough, and pot lights would only do "spots". Now am thinking maybe two pendants either side of stove area where light can go all around.
