colors for small living room?

my family has a really good grey sectional with bright blue piping trim and a really nice ruby/brown area rug. we don't want to get rid of either but not sure how to color coordinate for new wall color and furnishings. any ideas? we like things to look modern and simple. thanks for any suggestions!

I would eliminate the rug, change it to something more transitional \ contemporarty and go from there... thought it is a nice rug it just does not go with the couch. Love the table!

I agree with specialty doors, I do think that you need a new rug. Here are a few suggestions:

I understand what all of you are saying. The rug is the main thing giving me a hard time, but because we are on a tight budget and we'd like to keep the only two things we actually do have, I was hoping there could be a creative way to work with them.

I was toying with a wall colour of Hudson Bay from Benjamin Moore (or a bit lighter) with red curtains. And maybe brown/blue/red/mustard cushions...?

here's a nice rug that could tie it all together for a fairly low cost: http://www.target.com/p/room-essentials-striped-woolure-area-rug-5-x7/-/A-14497129#prodSlot=medium_1_30

Sorry, I might not be helping you out here, I'm just not sure how to tie the 3 things together that you currently have. The sectional and Noguchi table are classic mod/contemporary, I just don't see a way to link the rug in successfully.

And the rug is on the small side for the sofa. The more classic pattern might work if the colors were right for the sofa, but they aren't.

thank you everyone for your suggestions! I was really hoping to not have to get rid of anything, so I will try dclostboy and anne dee's advice for now in hope that it will work out. Worst case, I will have to replace the rug my family is really wanting to keep.

dclostboy, I actually saw this cushion shopping the other week and was considering it.

Look for a couple other solid ones in light turquoise and rust in the same color as this cushion and it will look much more cohesive. Right now people are just seeing the two items as separate pieces rather than the whole of the room

dclostboy, you read my mind. Do you think I could get away with a darker and muted shade of blue with the rust/red color for solid cushions?

We love the color combination of pale blue and red or gray and red. The throw pillows recommended by dclostboy are a great example of how the colors can be fused together. Look how this design incorporates the same color scheme (just with a rug that has a more neutral backdrop). Paint color is Benjamin Moore Sea Foam. Also, if you are intent on keeping the rug, have you tried re-orienting it's position. Often with a smaller rug, you don't have to place your furniture on top of it. Pull it out away from the sofa to create a bigger space and make it more the centerpiece.

The problem with matching one floral pattern to another floral pattern is color tone.
Dots/ plaids/geometrics/striped pillows plus the use of cream/brown/black would be easier to find to coord/complement the rug .
    IMHO

RugPal, I was thinking of switching the orientation of the rug to give it more length. Figure I'd do it later since everything will need to be moved once I start painting anyways. Thanks for confirming what I was thinking. I also like the colour combo in your photo. I think I will give it a try with slightly more shaded or muted tones since the rug is deeper.

anne, I know what you mean. In the store, the colour of the cushion seemed to match fairly well with the rug. And the tones of blue in there would help with the sectional. I think I'll purchase it to try out, and just opt for all solids if it doesn't work out.

Ignore the blue. Look for kilim pillows with reds and browns. Paint the wall a deep chocolate.

Groveraxle, that actually looks really nice even without the blue. Are you using a specific program to create the image?
Genevieve, I like those rugs you posted. I think in the future if we have the budget I will see if the family is willing to part with the ruby rug.

Does the rug have to stay on the floor ? Wall hanging??

jmbny65, i'm actually not a fan of hanging such a heavy rug on the wall. But thanks for an interesting idea. Maybe I will look for some minimalist or abstract wall art that can help tie it together too. Or just paint my own.

I think the rug looks great. I would add pillows in a solid dark red.... picking up the red in the rug, and then add the two printed pillows you have. I think white walls, or a grey darker than the sofas, or even lighter, but not the same shade as the sofa, would look lovely. Hang some nice prints in black frames to finish up.

The rug does need to go, it's holding back your couch and fabulous table. Can you use the rug in your bedroom?
The rug is very nice but if moved and a bit of wood is exposed all around it would look even better ,just try it and for the pillows don't go dark compliment the rug differently .

I would go with no rug in that area. Then on to walls. Hmmm .
Needs color and should be more contemporary or transitional.

If you remove the rug entirely, you still need to paint the walls. This may be a bit too minimal.

A muted blue would work...see how nice the blue color looks in the paint Grover provided.
Maybe would be a nice soft blue with gray sofa, rug does not go well with the couch, perhaps something lighter ..

Thank you everyone for the rug suggestions. I agree that ideally I would have a cool or blue toned rug to work with, but I think for now I'm going to try to find some furnishings and wall choices similar to what's been suggested here that could help tie what I do have better together. I am leaning towards a shaded blue wall though
