Thanks for your help, one problem is that hubby loves the tv in the corner, and we tryed putting the tv on the ledge wall, and we have a real glare on the tv from the window. Also improvements on the mantle or ledge wall? Thanks again for reading my question,.

I feel like the mantle may be too full......how about moving the plant on the hearth and putting the three candlesticks together there?
The shelves right behind the couch look great....the one behind the chair does not seem to flow as well....size and proportion seem off. Wonder about even trying the K on the hearth on the shelf to add a little variety with the pictures.

Curtains would keep glare off tv and soften the look of the room :)

Maybe it is the canvas that is not working since it does not have the same dark frame and the white around it like the others???

I feel that this type shelving would work better in a home office, where smaller photos may be close enough to be seen. I like the canvas, as the subject can be seen from across the room, and think you might enlarge 5 more to go with it behind the sofa. The only items that show up clearly on the mantel are the candlesticks; I'd suggest removing the rest, and aiming for just one or two items to go with them, blackening the brass below, and removing the floor bobs. Very nice room. You asked about your wall display, so you may not be 'sure' about it. I think one thing that might be unsettling about it is that that they at all leaning at different angles. I think I would remove the shelves, move the mirror from the fireplace (which isn't reflecting anything) to that wall to reflect the window, and surround with a few of your favorite photos hung on the wall. Replace the mirror with some fun artwork. I would try floating your couch so it's back is to the dining room, and can face the fireplace and tv, then 2 chairs on the wall across from the window, one in the corner angled toward the couch, one angled toward the TV. End table to left of couch and one between the chairs. You may not have room for the 3rd chair, but you can try it in front of the window. Curtains up to the ceiling will definitely cozy up the room and help with TV glare. Just some ideas to think about. Good luck!

I think the mirror should go on the wall across from the window, too. I like the photo layout in the GREEN AND GRAY HOME OFFICE.

Look at what they did with those shelves.

Shelves on the left need to be lower, and perhaps moved a tad to the right, though that part is hard to tell from this angle.

Amazing how just lowering those shelves on the left made such a huge difference!

I might get rid of the darker family pic on the other wall....it almost looks like it did not fit with the others so it was just stuck there. I know you did not do that, though!

if I take the dark picture off the wall what else would I put on that wall? also I think I may move around the ledges, what are your thoughts on using the dark family picture on the ledges above the sofa? I have to think about the idea about moving the mirror, It took me foreever to figure out what to put on the mantle, but if you ladies have some ideas I maybe would consider at this point, thanks for any ideas..

Do you still have the round clock? You will get varying opinions on a clock on the mantle, but you could TRY it there with the three candle sticks. Have the arrangement stay within the fire insert area and not all the way to the edges of the mantle. If you think of that small of an area, maybe it will be easier to think of something. But when you look in the mirror, you can realize what is being said about what is being reflected. I love that mirror and hope it will still work in your home. I have a feeling the family pic is important and it is worth trying it on a ledge. The wall? Leave it blank. It may surprise you to see how nice it will look empty. In a way, the lamp is on the wall, if you look at the wall from the end of the room. Blank spaces are necessary in a room.

Move the mirror to the wall opposite of the window. Put the clock in its place over the mantle. Keep the candles there too. Surround the mirror with the ledges for photos. If you are looking to purchase something new or create something new, add art. If it is in a frame with glass, it will reflect some light at times.

Thanks, I'm working on your ideas, now to convince hubby about redoing the ledges, and moving the mirror. also looking at the room, if I don't do the clock on the mantle with the candlesticks, what type of art would you recommend? Its a rather high mantle, and always hard to see whats on the print, as many years ago I had a Terry Redlin print above the mantle, and it was alwasy hard to see, being it was up high, unless you walked right up to it. I really appreciate all help you have been offering me, I have never done this before..

I would put a large mirror over the couch. I would stack the ledges on the left side of the fireplace I think the pictures on the ledges are on the small side. If they were stacked above each other I think it would look better Having them grouped together

OH! Terry Redlin.....our favorite artist! I live in his hometown!!! With all the details he has in his art, I can understand not being able to fully appreciate them without a close view.

For fun, try the family pic with the candles....they seem to have the same dark base color. I know that pic is small, but maybe???

If not art with glass, just choose a large canvas piece. Looking forward to seeing it.

Hi Abbyjean: thanks for your ideas, the dark family photo is larger then the clock, so i leaned it up on the fireplace mantle, it isn't bad, could work, as far as the mirror over the sofa, i could hang it up vertically its 34" high x 28, now how could I work in those ledges, I was thinking maybe the 3ft ledge on each side of the mirror, and then the 2 ft legdges out alittle above the 3 ft ledges, it possibly would be longer then the sofa itself, as the sofa is 73" long, but this wall I'm working with is 18ft long, so i have space to move things around, again thanks, I love all the ideas and help I'm getting this is great, I love the museum that Terry Redlin has in your hometown, its a amazing place to visit... I am impressed.......you know about the museum we have here! We are all sort of mourning that fact that he is no longer able to paint or realize all he has accomplished.

It is suggested that art/items cover 2/3 of the area it is behind. While I realize that is a suggestion, this is one time I have to agree as I have seen so many rooms on here where the items are out of proportion and extend beyond and it truly does not look right.

Is it possible to take the ledges down....leave the nails.....and prop the mirror there? See what it looks like?

I can see the two ledges still working by the chair. Choose your favorite items for them.

I would love to see the K become a part of your decor and wonder if it also could work on the mantle.....the pic plus the three candles need one more item to give you the odd number that also looks best.

I still am not a fan of the ledges in the living room, regardless of location, since I think they encourage placement of items that are too small for the space and their protrusion from the wall over a seating area always feels like bad chi to me. I would move the mirror to the wall with your Big K from the mantle and some of your favorite photos from the ledges.

I'm liking the idea about using the big K, I'm going to redo the ledges and work that K into the arrangement. This is our family room, and is more of a relaxed feel then a living room, that why I did ledges more informal. But thanks for your ideas, I'll keep it in mind for now.

abbyjean, sorry i didn't have a chance to comment, but i think that for me with all these ledges i'll just take them down and rearrange the ledges, i centered the sofa on the 18 ft wall, put the red recliner to the left the of fireplace, with a lamp/table between the couch and recliner. it looks better, i'll just redo and see what this wall does, i loved the idea about the mirror above the sofa, will keep it in mind, loved hearing from you, you can continue if you wish, I think that we are both from the midwest...

Oh! I bet it looks nice with the recliner to the left of the fireplace with the couch. Great idea!

Hello: I'm back again, and still debating about this whole room!!! Just wonder if the arrangement of furniture is the right design for the room??? the room is 13 ft wide, and 18 ft long, the sofa is on the 18 ft wall. We want to get rid of the red recliner, its not comfortable. any ideas? Tv has to stay put, so have to work around that, I posted a few aweeks ago, had suggestions I put the mirror above the sofa???? If I do, what type of art above the fireplace, and I do love these ledges, and I love hanging family photos also> Also need window treatment,

One idea...if the sofa was centered not on the wall but directly across from the window on (sofa still on the long wall), put one of the chairs in the corner to the left of the fireplace and the other chair to the right of the window facing the opposite chair, so it too would be on a diagonal.

I am going to try moving it, it may work out really well, and your ideas on the ledges, should I center them over the sofa?

It's tough working with a fireplace and TV. I have the same problem trying to work with fighting focal points. I think your TV is in the correct place. Your shelves and photos are special to you but make the room a bit busy. I would keep the candle holders on the mantle and remove the mirror. Could keep one set of shelves with photos in the room and place the others in another room? All the walls do not need to be filled. Big items work better than lots of small ones. Space should also be honored making for a less cluttered and restful room. All in all it's very workable.

I would like to rearrange my ledges above sofa, trying to work in four ledges instead of three, the sofa is centered on the long wall, any ideas?

Do you have a current pic to share and get the juices flowing again?

This is a current picture of my family room, I would also like to add a ottoman/or coffee table infront of the sofa, but it get to crowded, maybe new on ideas on furniture arrangement..
