Need help on the Chandelier in living room

last modified: 12 years ago
I just installed a crystal chandelier in living room. As shown in the pic, however, there are two potential concerns:

1) the distance between the bottom of the chandelier and the floor is 6 1/2'. Is this too low?

2) does the chandelier fit in a traditional style house?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks, decoenthusiaste, I agree with you that the chandelier is contemporary. But I do like the style. Beside that, I have been looking for a traditional crystal chandelier with 30" diameter and 16" height. But this is the only thing that comes close.

Anyway, the store owner accepts return in 14 days even with open box, so I still have choices. Any suggestions on where to shop for a traditional crystal chandelier with 30" diameter and 16" height?

Go to the Find A Pro link above and find Lighting under Products on the left side. Should filter by your location.

Depending on how many levels / arms, you may be able to go down to as much as 24"...if current one is 30", it's taking a lot of volume in the room.

Thanks, dclostboy, I used the common formula to determine the size of chandelier. The room is 10•20, so a 30" chandelier is proper I think.

Good rule of thumb, yes...but need to compensate for fireplace bump out and the coffered ceiling. Both reduce available "open" volume in the room. Think 28 or two tier 24" might still work well. And be more traditional.

As opposed to a chandelier, I think I would do a semi-flush mount. The internet has tons of options available with crystals if that is the look you are going for.

I think the chandelier looks fabulous! I think that to tie in a more traditional style, I would add a little more structure to the area, such as a clock on the mantle to tie it all together. Here is an option:

    Hope this helps!

I love your room and think the chandelier is fine. But my question would be...what is it's purpose? Is it over something to light it? Or is it supposed to act as general overall lighting? I can't tell from the photo because I think this furniture arrangement isn't the permanent one.

Lovely chandelier but I don't think it fits into the room because it is so contemporary. I agree with Julie above that a semi flus mount would be better. I assume u r using the lighting for general overhead illumination. A higher light might provide more diffuse illumination.

Sorry, guys, I somehow could not attached pics from my cell. Here is the traditional chandelier I am thinking of now.
It has similar size as the contemporary one currently in the room.

Beautiful chandelier but think it will dominate the room. Also, I picture it in a very large grand ballroom type of space. It is almost too traditional for the room. Another idea is just to put a recessed light like the one already in the ceiling in the space where the chandelier is.

This is the one I have in living room...the brass compliments the yellow paint. The second one is my dining room...have taken this one from house to house, as I love it. The rooms are both larger than your room, but the lights don't dominate visually.

annapearl, I want the light to be a focal point. I will put a round traditional sofa table beneath it.

dclostboy, your lights are beautiful, but I think they may be a little small according to the rule of thumb for the size. Btw, love the paint on the fireplace.

Rules of thumb are to be used as guidelines. Even with the 11 foot ceilings in the living room, it would never support a 50" chandelier....that would be all you'd see...but it's what the ROT calls for. As it is, they're both just under 30".

I'm sure you are over all of the comments, but if you are unsure then maybe you should go with something different - listen to your gut! I think it it's a beautiful fixture and I think it would be fine as long as you are balancing the room with items that tie in the fixture. Big fan of drum-like fixtures though - we r redoing our living room/dining room. We installed this drum from restoration hardware. Plus we r having recessed lighting installed today to give more light. Just giving you another option....

Aaron I think your choice is perfect. As long as the table is below it, no worries. I think the other one is too contemporary for your house unless you want to go contemporary.

    Hi!
You have a very nice light. But not much seems to suit the room style traditional
Materials of lights suitable for modern style room with many glass and its size is larger than the area of your room.
There are a few small suggestions you want to send to, and some form of modern classic lamps, Ceiling lamps should be chosen or chandelier average diameter suitable room area,
    Wishing you great choice.
