What do I do with the gold band. Also what do you think of the tile not geeing flushed with the mantel or sides?

The gold banding is actually an edging that is installed under the tile to give a clean edge. You would not be able to remove it with out removing the tile. However it may not be necessary to remove if alternative additions could be installed over it. What are the limitations to redesigning in your condo. Are you allowed to do anything structural or permanent?
