Love the vintage travel and airplane theme! Would you consider a lighter blue ceiling? One that looks more like sky rather than water?
Something along the lines of Palladian Blue

I, like Denita, think the dark blue would be too over the top and take away from your beautiful trim.

What if the bed were a color ? Then the ceilings a lighter blue? I would like to see the planes fly in a light blue sky.

I think so much depends on the actual room. In this room they have a rather large set of windows and those built in cabinets that are probably semi gloss or satin, reflecting a lot of light. Plus they have the wood floors, which yes, are dark, but I think somewhat reflective. Without those elements I don't think you could pull this off with that dark on a paint color.

Yes I am looking at doing a lighter blue on the ceiling than the one shown above. Something between sky and what I call dusty Dusty blue(Disney Planes movie). Benjamin Moore Whipple Blue or Gossamer Blue are pretty. I too would like a lighter blue on the ceiling and darker version of it in the decor.

I have been looking for a good vintage travel poster. Every time I find one I like it's way out of my range. Or of course the colors aren't quite right.
I am planning to look more when we go to the Osh Kosh Airshow. There's bound to be a good photo or poster at the swap meet.

Yes his room is a simple box with one window. No big window like the pictures above. Nice wood maple wood floors in our house though.

If you have tall ceilings, a dark blue will be fine. It actually makes the space "fall away" as in a dark night sky. If you have 8' ceilings, the space will feel much more confined. Of course, from a child's perspective, even 8' ceilings are pretty far away. What does your son want? How nice that he has a mom that will paint the ceiling dark blue. You can always repaint when he outgrows it. He'll only be young once!

Yes - it will be great with fir trim and white wall. Definitely you can paint it blue. You don't have to go too dark to look like a dark blue in a room - for instance, van deusen blue looks like a dark navy inside. The look above is wonderful if you have good natural light / a southern or western exposure. You can also use a gloss so it reflects light if you don't mind messing with that next time. Depending on your inspiration - look at http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW6803-danube/ or even one step lighter, jacaranda. Look at the colors on the monitor sideways for how the will appear on a ceiling plane . . it darkens their appearance considerably because you read across the color instead of straight on.

I think just because you have a small room you shouldn't be afraid to add drama with darker colors. And because this is a kids room don't be afraid to have some fun with it. Do the dark ceiling with either white walls or a lighter shade of the dark blue. And add some texture with a larger area rug in a similar shade to the wall paint color you end up choosing.
