Drape ideas

We're thinking about doing a floor to ceiling color block drape in teal, chocolate and white. I feel as if this would all be too linear and would like to see something more organic/botanical. My designer recommends the color block but I wanted a second opinion. Any comments would be very appreciated!

Also, any recommendations on lamps would be great!

Has you designer shown you examples? What do you think about these patterns?

For your wallcolor and furnishings, I would choose Bedroom and 1564 Coalbanks. Notice that The Barberry Plan has a floral pattern under the gray.

Westchester and Bedroom are the same pattern, but Westchester has white on top, which won't work for your wall color, but it is my favorite (and it wouldn't work with my wall color, lol). I love the contrast between the white and the bottom color.

I do like the Westchester and agree that it wouldn't work too well. I like the Coalbanks but feel as if it would be too dark for the room and the bedroom was very bright for our taste. Thank you for your comments!

When I looked for floral are I got was FLORAL which screamed FIGHT!!!! How about color block in an organic hanging style (if that makes sense). A little "messy"?

Well, I was going more for style than color. Has your decorator suggested any specific colors?
Have you ruled out a solid drape since you have a strong pattern in the rug and pillows?
I think the right color block, which would be the a two color, style would be great. How about either the Coalbanks or the Barberry - darker solid on top and lighter color on bottom?

Consider the clip top treatment for a more casual look.

DId your designer advise a new coffee table? If that one is new, then move it 18" from the large sofa to be useful. However, I'd advise a round one with more interest. Accent it with an arc lamp hovering above it. You could use an accent chair, and I'd ditch the chevron pillows. They almost look nautical in this setting. I'd prefer the color block drapes to the chevron pillows any day, but together they'll be too much. Chevron is overdone IMO. Here's a chart to help with table lamp size.

Hi, while I was adding curtains and some pillows, a lamp and a round coffee table to your room, I see that decoenthusiaste also suggested another coffee table. In fact, I prefer her choices :-) I feel that your pillows fight with your rug and need something added to them to tone it down a bit.
Your table lamp is a bit small, so I added a larger one.

The carpet is the star here because of its very bold pattern.

I think a large, square glass coffee table would work well here (30" or even a 36" square).

Because the ceilings are very tall, I suggest stacking two large pieces of art to the left of the TV and losing that plant, which sticks out like a sore thumb and competes with the TV in scale.

Because the window seems "short" against the tall wall, consider either placing the curtain rod high on the wall and perhaps using a roman shade to cover the wall above the window, OR placing a rod 2" or so above the window trim and then 12" or so wider than the window for proper proportion. The room needs to feel like it is "human scale." The left wall is already a dark color and very tall. I don't know that I would suggest color-blocked curtains. If the darker color will be on top, it will only draw the eye to it and look out of place against that tall beige wall. I would tend towards solid-color curtains, the same tone as the wall, so the carpet can be allowed to be the star of this room's decorating show.

Use only solid colors for pillows...or very, very tiny tone-on-tone prints (that "read" as a solid color)....the herringbone patterned ones on the sofas compete too much with the rug. Can you move them to another room? Assuming you use blue tones for the pillows, it will be enough contrast to pull the eye "down" to human-scale and you will feel more comfortable.

The best way to decorate this room with curtains and art is to pretend the ceilings are at a more standard height, especially since the TV is already at a "human-scaled" proportion.

Carolins and decoenthusiaste have really transformed your room already. I love the track you are taking! Big fan of the round industrial coffee table.

So all of you feel fine about second guessing another designer's work?

Wow! Thank you all so much for the responses. @carolin, thank you making that visual! What program so you use? It was very helpful! Also, @decoenthusia your ideas were wonderful and will be heavily considered

Photoshop :-) I actually really like the colour block curtains idea.

Ya'll are making me want a round coffee table for MY living room! deco and carolins, round looks great in Kimberly's living room. :)
@hanna1984 thank you also for all your suggestions! :-)

I don't at all like the color block idea, it always makes me wonder wether the maker ran out of fabric or imagination. I would go for a linen with background color to match the wall color and then maybe a stripe or print that picks up the chocolate and/or teal.

You're very welcome! I got ideas for my own living room curtains. :)

hanna1984, I thought a round coffee table would work better with the pattern in the beautiful rug here :-)

I've been a designer for over 12 years now, I'm a seamstress as well & have an engineer, nurse, computer programmer & organic chemist PhD in my immediate family.
I'm stating this because whenever I work with clients, I ALWAYS have reasons to support my recommendations whether functional or aesthetic…I don't believe one can be truly successful without them.
Everything needs to make sense…maybe the lack of justification here is why you feel compelled to request outside assistance.
Now, to be more specific; The boldly graphic elements in your room, your rug & pillows, currently own most of your visual attention.
By adding more of the same in the form of color block panels, you're generating much more visual "volume"... might your eye become a bit overwhelmed? or would you enjoy incorporating even more pattern?
These are parts of a conversation you need to have with your designer.
If I were you then I would ask my designer to provide "sketches" of his/her ideas so that you can more realistically absorb them & subsequently make your best choice.
    Good luck!

carolins, I like the idea of a round coffe table. I've actually been thinking of whether it should be glass on a chrome base or made of very light wood. Or maybe an antiqued beige to match the rug. When you go to sleep Houzzing, you know you're invested in a project. :D

Kim Harvey, I'm not sure what the background of your or my immediate family members have to with design, but I can see a color blocking design working very well in Kimberly's situation. Either a block at the top or bottom would be very pleasing to the eye. I would wait to see what color and fabrics the designer chooses to use before I give my final opinion. I posted examples of different color blocking designs, as did other Houzzers. I hope they helped Kimberly see what color blocking could do in her case :)

    Update on the drapes:
    I like the curtains!
Like the curtains. Maybe add more organic element with pillows. IMO the chevron pillows and rug are too much of the same thing. Maybe move your print pillows to the sofa, one chevron to the chair.?
@tkailua I see what you're saying, my designer really likes them and I've expressed my concern with them competing for attention with the rug, however at this point in time I've put that on the back burner. Pillows can be easily changed for a less expensive price rather than wall art, but yes, new pillows will be tested. I'm having much difficulty with wall art tho, would you happen to have any recommendations?

Art has to be something that you love. It is thé way to add your personality to your home. So for me the most important thing about art is that you love to see it, not if it goes well with your furniture.
