If you haven't seen the ideabook on black doors and trim, you might want to check it out. Personally, painting the trim, moulding and fireplace black and the walls Almond Latte (Dunn Edwards) would look great. Good Luck

There is certainly more than one way to skin a cat and depending on your vision for this room I would recommend painting the trim out in white like Benjamin Moore's Cloud white.
The end result will be a very classic look that would would suit and compliment the design elements already present. Your beautiful wood floors would pop and the fireplace would become the focal pint instead of the windows. As it is right now the wood trim surrounding the windows is distracting away from the beautiful view outside
    Good Luck!

Hi Walt1010 -- To my eye, your instincts are right. The oak trim is a bit '80's, and if you do choose antique white for the trim, you might study the art over your mantlepiece for your wall color. One of the warmer tones would make the indigo in that painting stand out. Then that could become your accent color.

I'm also wondering if your side tower bookcases flanking the TV could pair up elsewhere, only because they are landing at about the same height as your mantle and I'm not sure where to look.

What do you use to clean your floors -- my goodness, they shine like a mirror!

Thanks for the suggestions. My apologies- these pictures were taken w/ the last owner's furniture. I am starting from scratch - I am buying new furniture and can do anything at this point!

Oh good -- I was trying to be kind about the furnishings. Now I can see the black trim with almond, white with ? -- and I suggest you click the photos tab above and type "fireplace window" into the search bar, and browse a few hundred photos of different trim and color combinations to see what inspires you. Once you know what direction you want to take it, the rest of your decisions will be easier.

    Hi,
I would definitely paint ALL the trims in white to update the room. Keep the wall color in a very light neutral color and maybe get a darker shade painted on the wall above the mantel.

Coming along but still would like to see the window trim painted. Like the black leather. How would it look next to the fireplace and having the loveseat where the black leather is now?

I still agree that the window trims would need to be painted white. I can see that the adjacent dining room has similar trims. You would have to carry the same color trims in the rest of the house.
As for the layout of the room, I think the wall with fireplace and TV stand is too busy. I would redesign the entire room to create a better flow and have some harmony. My suggestions are as follows:
    - Move the TV stand on the opposite wall where the long sofa is.
    - Move the white leather loveseat where the TV stand is
    - Put the long sofa perpendicular to loveseat (replacing dark leather chair) in a L shape.
    - Put small square accent in between 2 sofas
    - Put dark leather chair at a slight angle (back towards the dining room)
    - Use the footstool (ottoman) as a coffee table (although I think it is too small and would recommend getting a larger one).

Please do not hesitate to send new pictures.

I think painting the trim white and putting a warm neutral on the walls is wonderful. I would paint all the trim, the doors and the fireplace the antique white. As beautiful as the wood is, it creates a chopped up feeling. I believe most of the time a lighter trim is the way to go.
