For me, it'd depend on what I was planning to put in them. If I needed a place to hide the kids game controllers and other TV entertainment stuff I'd go with the one that had doors just to keep that stuff contained. But if I wanted a place to display things or for books, I'd probably get the open one.

my opinion is either everything in a room match or nothing if your gonna do a mismatch then you have to make sure that one item doesn't throw off the other meaning it doesn't attract more attention to itself if it does then the room will feel unbalanced

Valid point. I forgot to mention that even the open bookcase has enclosed doors on the bit to portion to hide things.

Hi Nicole. Your room looks good. They don't have to match -- one might even get away with two totally different bookcases, although that could be tricky. But if you've two bookcases of the same design and size, same colour and finish, and one has shelves and the other doors, I can't see any reason why you shouldn't use them like that.
