I would remove the ghost chair and put in a mirror and a small table. Who wants to sit alone in a hallway? People do like a last minute mirror check when exiting or entering and it is nice to have a spot for keys.

Remove ghost chair and think about a narrow console and mirror. Even though just "decorations", they should serve a purpose :)

Remove the chair. It detracts. Put a long and very narrow hall table under the painting, and do not add anything else to the space. You may even want to remove the table after you have tried it under the picture.
The classic columns require the space to be as "empty" as possible. Imagine a Greek temple, the simplicity evoked by the rising columns. Imagine Monticello. The rug is stunning and supports the simplicity of the space. The classic design in the rug contrasts and complements the columns.
Perhaps the chandelier is hung too high and is too dark. I see a crystal chandelier as more suited to the "light" space.
What a beautiful house you have. It celebrates the roots of America. The Patriots came to the wilderness and they wanted to recreate the glory of ancient Greece and Rome in the New World. That is why the entrance to your home looks like a Greek temple.

thanks everyone! ktyrrell1, I agree the chandelier is an eyesore, it had already been installed when we found the house. I plan on changing it out ASAP. JudyG Designs, great suggestion regarding raising the painting. It made a huge difference! I put the chair in the dining room for now…we'll see where it ends up. Thanks for the advice guys! I plan on asking for more soon :-)

I actually like the way the chandelier works with the door and rug. It's architectural and sparse...fits the area well.

You have a lovely foyer. Have you thought about changing the runner. It is very abstract, at first I thought your floor had inlay. Makes for a very busy area with doorways, trim and columns.

I see what you're saying, grobby. They are carpet tiles from FLOR. Our house is pretty traditional architecturally, but my decorating style is contemporary, pushing modern even. The rug speaks to the decor in the rest of the house. I appreciate the suggestion though!

Instead of a console table, just a little decorative shelf under a mirror. It can hold seasonal decor or candles and not block traffic. For the mirror frame and shelf a glossy black would echo the light fixture.
