There are all kinds a rules and ways that people feel is the correct way to chose your items. My rule of thumb is to start with your cabinet colors first. That is going to be the primary color of your kitchen. Then start from the floor up to the ceiling.. Look for the type of flooring & floor color you would like next for it will be in most cases your next promanate color in the room. I would then work on the countertops, then the backsplashes, then the paint color of the room. There really is no right way or wrong way. Just figure out what you want as your main color of the kitchen then work off of that. In the case of this kitchen you asked about the flooring below. The homeowner wanted to have some contrast so she went with a lighter countertop for contrast, and looked for some of the colors in her backsplash tile, flooring, and cabinets as accent colors in her granite color.
